Carnival banco. An announcement is made that a carnival dance will be hold at. Waioeka on November IC. Light Rain in Gisborne. A light rain, fell in Gisborne this week, bringing the total for the month to date up to 23 points. Holiday Notice. On account of Monday next (Labour Day) being a statutory holiday, the “Opotiki News” will not be published on that date. Coif Dance at Waimana. A popular function to be held at Waimana will be the annual Golf Club dance, which will take place in the Waimana Hall on Thursday next, October 27. The music.will be supplied by the Melody Masters’ Orchestra. Tenders. Tenders are invited in to-day’s issue by the Opotiki County Council for two gravelling contracts on the J?aeratu and Woodlands roads and also for work in. connection with the raising of the Ruatuna road. North Island Temperatures. Conditions yesterday morning over most of the North Island were overcast. with the exception of the Bay of .Plenty and south to Napier. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland 58 degrees, Tauranga. and: East Cape (51, Opotiki (54, Gisborne 67, Napier 65, and Wellington 56. Land-Tax. The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day’s issue that the due date of payment of Landtax for the current year is on Monday, the 7tli. day of November. 1938, and that the demands will be posted on or about the 31st. day of October. Gala Dance. A reminder is given of the gala dunce, under the auspices of the \V, D.K-U. to iie held in the Lyric d! on Monday night. There will be numerous novelty dances and other attractions and a good time is assured all who attend. Horticultural Society Flower Show. The Opotiki and District Horticultural Society will bold is lirst quarterly show on Tuesday. November 8, in the I’aiisli Hall. Schedules will be availablo at a number of shops. The show will be open only to members of the society. The membership shows a steady increase and the small annual lee .should encourage many other garden enthusiasts to join up and secure the many advantages of membership. Auction 3hle. An auction sale, which is likely to arouse considerable public interest, will lie conducted in the land sale room of Dalgetv and Co. Ltd., Opotiki, when the farm property of the late Mrs. Mary Simpson, Nukuliou .North, will lie offered tor sale. The sale will bo conducted: by Messrs Paige ty and Co. Ltd. and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd-, acting in conjunction, under instructions from the Public, Trustee. Further particulars may he seen in the advertisement in to-day’s issue. Fight With a Boar. A well-authenticated story is related of Mr. Donald Nicholson, ail old resident of Tiiiiaru, whose death is reported. A Highlander of giant- stature. standing more than six feet -in height. M:r. Nicholson was l'or many wars employed as a .shepherd amongst the “Misty Gorges” of the Mackenzie Country. Un one occasion, on returning from attending his flocks, lie found a giant hoar besieging his dwelling, and showing no inclination to, retreat, with tlm coming of the owner. At last the pig showed light; it pursued M.r. Nicholson, who, unable to find other shelter, jumped into tlii> stream- Not to he outdone, the pig i)lunged in also. There, in the swirling waters a- grim struggle took place. Filially, Mr. Nicholson seized the hoar by the hind legs, and held them up, thus thrusting the snout into the water. Gradually the Highlander asserted his superiority; the pig weakened, and was at last drowned in a most unusual way . •
Whitebait season. Fairly good catches of whitebait have been secured in the Opotiki livers during the pa£t fortnight. The fish are stilt running in lair numbers in the rivers. r Election Figures. Owing to a mistake at the Kaiteratalii booth, Mir. A. G. Hultquist, the Labour candidate, was wrongly credited with 37 additional votes, and his majority has accordingly been reduced by this number. Special Announcement. Considerable interest will he evoked by the Choral Society’s announcement in to-day’s issue that Mr. Edwin Parker' the well-known violinist, will contribute items in the programme for their concert, next Wednesday.
