Mr. Hultquist congratulated his opponent on the large vote he had received and clean fight he had put up. He considered the great support Mr. Sullivan had received was a tribute W his personal qualities. He desired to thank the electors for giving him an absolute majority and was also pleased that his party had received a majority vote from the people. He thanked those who had supported and worked for him during the campaign. The fight had been a strenuous one and he had to admit that during that night he had had “the wind up” on -several occasions. He would continue to serve his constituents by again giving his full-time services.
Mr. Sullivan warmly congratulated his opponent on his win and said lie had had the experience of climbing to the top of the ladder and then down again. He particularly wished to thank those who ,had worked on his behalf, especially the ladies who had worked so hard. Both candidates received an enthusiastic- reception from the crowd in the street.
The sporting way in which Mr. Sullivan took his defeat has been the subject- of comment on every hand. The Nationalist candidate lias certainly enhanced liis reputation of being a public- man with a very fine reputation. It must have been a trying experience- to Mr. Sullivan to find himself increasing his majority as numerous returns came to hand and then when only a few returns were outstanding to have victory snatched from his grasp. During his speech Mr. Sullivan displayed not the * slightest trace of disajipointment at his narrow defeat and tin* general opinion was that he had proved himself “a real gentleman’’. The National candidate was fighting against an opponent who had put every effort into serving his cloc-
torate and the close voting was a decided tribute to Air. Sullivan’s personality and to the wonderful organisation built up by his committee.
