Competition Winner, The winner oi : a competition arranged by the Girl Guide Committee was Mrs. Irving, <j/o Mrs. Bridge, Tirohangu. The .prize was a dainty nightdress. Choral Society’s Concert. The box pi ah tor the Opotiki Choral Society’s concert is now open at Cress well’s. Tickets may be obtained lroni members or at Aulcl’s. A Correction. A report on the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Women’s Institute recently published, referred to the visit of the Blind Institute concert company. The reference should have read, “will again come before an Opotiki audience.” , i Polling Booths. The two main polling booths iii Opotild on. Saturday will he the Courthouse and the Parish Hall and people ■‘may vote at either of these two places. Electors are requested to vote as early as possible to assist the returning officers. Special facilities arc provided at the Courthouse for absent voters. Polling Results. Opotiki residents are requested to refrain from telephoning the Courthouse on Saturday night in order to enquire about election results, it is necessary that the Courthouse line should be kept clear for results coming from outside booths.' Arrangements have been made by the “Opotiki News’’ to co-operate with the J)c Luxe Theatre'where progress results will he broadcast. A special broadcasting apparatus will be installed in the theatre by Mr. Fred. Wrigley and all election results "ill be ro-l>roadcast in the, theatre until mid-night. C&rd Evening. The limit card evening under the auspices of the Opotiki branch of the Labour Party was recently held in the Parish Hall. There was a large attendance and a very happy atmosphere prevailed during the playing of the popular game ol Flag 500. The winners were Mrs. A. Jephson, Mrs. W. .Logan, Air. (A Pipe and Air. A. Litchfield who was also the winner of the travelling prize. ’ Consolation, prizes were awarded to Airs. J. Kerr jnr, Mrs. J. J. Moody, Ali\ A! ortimer and Tor. P. Bumble. Airs. J. O’Kiillivan jnr. -was presented with a. prize for her aggregate score. A dainty supper was served by the ladies of the committee and 1 concluded the junction.
Light Rain Last Night. Although tin* rain last night was only a light one, the effect should lit* beneficial to some extent as the surface of flic ground for some time lias bei'n practically dried right out. There appear to be people who do not know that the poll to be taken on the licensing issue's to-morrow must, he held in conjunction with the polling for the I’arliamentary general election. That is the law whc're a Parliament runs its lull term. An impression appears to have 1 , grown up ill some quarter's that there wore to be no more prohibition polls after that of three years ago, and that the notification of one bc'ing held on this jOcciision e\as unexpected. A Costly Fatality. A swan at £5 is rather a costly luxury, hub that is what one cost the South Canterbury Electric-Power Board in repairs when it lost its life by contacting with two power wires into contact to cause a blowing out of fuses and the cutting off of power over a district. About 50 starlings in flight recently decided to have a rest on a power wire. Their combined weight sagged this wire down to touch the wire below, and 50 dead starlings and a failure of electricity resulted. AVild ducks are frequent offenders, but tin l magpie holds the record. This bird has a weakness for sitting in an earthguard and brushing up his beak 011 the nearest wire.
Big Cattle Movement. As indicating the big movements of cattle through the Opotiki district, it is interesting to note that during tin l last six weeks, mobs aggregating 2000 have passed through Opotiki on the way to Bay of Plenty and the AYaikato. Home Power Consumption. At the monthly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Power Board, the engineormanager, Air., J. D. Dicker, reported that there hail been an increase of five per cent, in power consumption in the average home in the board's area in the last three years. One reason for the increased consumption was the increasing use of home* electrical appliances.

Schmitt, general manager for the Department of Tourist ancl Health;, Resorts, stated that an announcement!' of considerable interest was that mat-! ters were in train for the formation; of a special tourist district embracing!
