Money Found. A large sum of money which was lost by a Gisborne lady motorist when pussing through the AVuioeka Gorge, is reported to have been found. Address at Woodlands. At the monthly sitting of the Opotiki Magistrate’s Court, Samuel Reuata was charged that on October 1 lie was in a state of intoxication while in charge of a. motor-ear in Main Street. Renata pleaded guilty. Sergeant J. .labister stated that Renata was arrested by Constable Cooper and taken to the police station where lie jvas certified by a doctor as being intoxicated. In a statement to the bench tho accused said lie came in to do business and had eight drinks. This had no effect on him. lie thought lie was capable of handling a car and went down tho street and was picked up by Inspector Morel!. The magistrate, Mr E. L. Walton convicted and lined Renata Cls with costs. His license was also cancelled and lie was prohibited from obtaining another for 12 ninotlis. Half-holiday on Polling Day. All business premises must close at noon on polling day according to the not governing that day. The net states that where the polling day at any election is other than that appointed as the weekly half-holiday the provisions relating to the weekly halt-holiday is deemed to refer to the polling-day in lieu of the day so"appointed and it is not necessary for any employer to observe the day so appointed in the week in which the polling day lulls. Factories maid not close, hut reasonable opportunity of workers recording votes must la* granted. Hotels are not permitted to supply liquor to Maoris on Friday 1 Ith., and all hotels must close at noon on Saturday, loth. October. Charge of Cruelty. A charge of ill-treating a number of pigs was brought against Willi Told at yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. Sergeant Tshister prosecuted and said that on August 31st. lie received an anonymous telephone message. He visited the property of tho accused and saw live, pigs in a small enclosure. The pigs were practically swimming in mud and .were in a wretched condition. Two had just died before lie arrived. The weather at the time was had and the pigs had no shelter and there were no indications they had been fed. A girl told him she gave the pigs kumis sometimes hut she was not certain when. The accused pleaded guilty and elected to he dealt with summarily. Sergeant Ishister said Toki was working for the borough council and was some distance* away fro-in his home- Defendant said In* had nothing to say and he was fined £2 and costs 21s. Sergeant isbister said that the pigs had been let go alter his visit.
