Connor who acted as chairman, introduced Mr Sullivan to the gathering, mentioning that other candidates had withdrawn in Air Sullivan’s favour. Air Sullivan then addressed the meeting along similar lines to his Opotiki address, stressing that it was a question of socialism v. anti-socialism.

At the conclusion of his address, Air Sullivan was accorded a hearty

vote of thanks and confidence, proposed by Mr. Reg. Walker and seconded by Mr R. HeilleV.

Airs C. Black, on behalf of the ladies present, presented All’s Sullivan with a charming bouquet as a token of appreciation of her presence at the meeting. All’s Sullivan in response, thanked the ladies, mentioning that when first Air Sullivan was asked to stand, she was opposed to the idea. However, she was pleased that Air Sullivan was standing for she now had discovered the large number of friends that Air Sullivan had. The evening was concluded with a dainty supper. ,

MR. HULTQUIST’S CAMPAIGN COAST CAMPAIGNING During this week Air Hultquist addressed . further meetings of electors and . after visiting Hiruharama Native School on Alonday morning, lie addressed a largely attended meeting of lady electors in the Alamitahi Hotel, RuatOiia, upwards of eighty ladies being present. At the conclusion of the meeting all present rose and sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and afterwards partook of afternoon tea, which was kindly provided by Airs P. J. Burton.

Airs Hnltquist remained at the hotel with the kulies until the evening, but Mr Hnltquist proceeded with Mr (i. B. A. Whiting, his Coast organiser, and Constable Birch, who acted as guide, to tlu> Pakihiroa homestead, several miles inland from Buatoria, at the loot of Hikurangi mountain. In order to reach this particular station, Mr Hnltquist had a rough ride in his car over roads which were, seriously damaged recently by floods, and in fact, which are always liable to damage by the treacherous Tapuwaeroa Biver. The party had to use horses to reach the dining room at the station in which the address was given, and they arrived at approximately 4.-Id p.im, Air Hnltquist addressing the station hands until G.ld and returning in the dark to Buatoria, where; he had dinner, prior to proceeding to Whakaangiangi, where he stayed the night' with farmer friends. On Tuesday afternoon Mr Hnltquist proceeded to Flick’s Bay, and oil Tuesday night was scheduled to address a public meeting at Te Araroa, and afterwards he was to be the guest dir* supporters at a social and dance in the ‘Maori meeting Hall.

te: ARAROA address

Mr and Mrs A. G. Hultquist, and liis party, including iVL'r G. it. A. 'Whiting, his Const- organiser, returned to Gisborne to-day from the Hast Coast, where since Monday, Mr Hultquist addressed meetings at Ruatoria, Hick’s Bay, Pakiliiroa Station, To' Araroa, Waima freezing. Works, Tokomaru Bay, and Arero. On Tuesday afternoon lie addressed a largely attended meeting of residents* of Hick’s Bay and surrounding districts, which was presided over by Mr Miartin Jensen, and at the conclusion a vote of thanks and confidence in the Government and Mr Hultquist was carried with one dissentient. At Te Araroa on Tuesday night the best attended political meeting yet held there, and the most enthusiastic so far as the Government’s policy is concerned, greeted Mr Hultquist in the theatre. Mr Charles Cowan, a well-known farmer of the district, presided over an audience of over 200. At this, as at other, meetings, the chairman paid a tribute to the services rendered by Mr Hultquist and thanked him for his Special interest in the farmers, and their problems. Mr Hultquist spoke for an hour and a-half, without interruption, and at the conclusion of liis address, those present were, invited to ask questions, but none were forthcoming. Mr W. F- Metcalfe, president of the local branch of the National Party, then made a statement. This was followed by a presentation, to the member. , On Wednesday. Mir proceeded to Tokomaru Bay, where in the lunch hour he addressed an audience of eighty-three in the Waima Barracks. This ‘meeting was presided over by Mr Biguell, who also paid a tribute to Mr Hultquist’s ‘ services to the electorate, in introducing him to those\present. This .meeting was a particularly enthusiastic one, a unanimous resolution of thanks and confidence in the Government being carried with prolonged applause. On Wednesday afternoon Mr Hultquist addressed a meeting of lady- electors in the Masonic Hall, the room being -well filled. The ladies present provided afternoon tea at -the conclusion of the meeting, and here again a r ote of thanks and confidence in the Government was earned with only one dissentient.

The candidate spoke at Arero School last evening, the school-room being packed to capacity.' and Mr "1. Ij. parts, J.P., a prominent fanner supporter of the Government,- and member of the Bay of Plenty ..-Labour Campaign Committee, presided, and thanked Mr. Hultquist for bis services as member, to the Farmers’ l uion. of which- lie, Mr Watt, was a member, to the school, of which lie was chairman, and to the people generally, and said that he believed the present member- would be returned with an overwhelming majority at the forthcoming poll. As the member’s voice still shows signs of the severe strain imposed upon it, he decided to bring liis organiser with him to Gisborne, and-fit is "intended that Mr Whiting assist him in his public addresses foi the next few days, until Mr Hultquist recovers his voice completely. In conversation with a press reporter in Gisborne yesterday Mr Hultquist stated that after having visited the Coast this week lie was more confident than ever that the vote in his favour this election would result- in him being returned with an overwhelming majority. Reports from all other parts of the electorate are mostencouraging. He is convinced that the great bulk of the electors have already made up their minds wliat they are going to do, as a result of their experiences of the past three as compared with their experienes during the four years in which the previous Government- occupied the treasury b'enches, and in addition because oi their understanding of the political situation, assisted no doubt, by the broadcasting of parliament and political addresses from time to time.
