ORIGINAL XAMK (Contrihuted) d’he original word or name tor Opotilci was. “Opotiki-mai-Tawhiti” meaning “you descendant, from alar”. Strange to say, tin* word originated liem two small fishes brought over from the original home of the Maoris, Hawaiki. * Where the township of Opotiki now stands, and tin* whole valley is still known by most Maoris of to-day as Pakihai. In the writer’s youth the Kowhai tree used to grow in this district;.
