MR. HULTQUIST O.PEM3 HIS ;/ CAMPAIGN
GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE AT \ PAPER-MILLS
One lumclred, electors greeted JV-A Huitquist at the Whakatane Paper Mills on Monday evening, when lie delivered his initial speech in what* ho said would be to- him a strenuous campaign, as he proposed to deliver upwards of eighty public. addresses to his constituents during the next rive wedks. Mr Brown, secretary-manager of the paper mills Occupied -the 'chair, and in welcoming Mr Huitquist referred: to his work as member, and congratulated him on the kcyen and energetic manner in which ho had devoted himself to his task during ' the past three' years, thanking him especially for the assistance lie had given from ■tinle to time to the Whakatane Paper Mills. Mr Huitquist came before the audience that evening with a record in public and semi-public life which was outstanding, and the chairman commended him to the audience as a worthy representative, deserving their renewed confidence for many years to come. Before calling on Mr Huitquist to speak, Mr Brown read the following telegram which had been received that day from- the Prime Minister: — %
“I have just learned that you are opening your election campaign to-night. Jt gives *iue the utmost pleasure, to commend your splendid work on behalf of your district, and the Baj’ of Plenty people whose interests and welfare you have stressed with admirable energy and enthusiasm. Your record in your first term of parliamentary service has been such as to deserve an emphatic renewal of confidence at the forthcoming poll. I ask the Bay of Plenty electors to compare the pastthree years of achievement by the Labour Government and tlie resultant prosperity and progress, with the general stagnation and social misery Under the National Government during four years of hard depression. That cruel experience must never be allowed to happen again. I hope the people throughout your electorate will realise that the vital issue at the poll is the maintenance of prosperity and active development of the'whole cquntry. / A Labour Government means social happiness and security for all the people, and to ensure the continuation. of the Government in office it is essential that the representation in Parliament of the Bay of Plenty electorate'. should not be changed- I wish you great success. .Kindest regards. M. J. Savage” ; and its reading was received with great enthusiasm by those present.
On rising to speak Mr Hultquist was greeted with prolonged applause bv the large audience present, which included a number of women folk, and farmers from the surrounding district. Mr Hultquist stated that he was confident of the result- of the forthcoming., election, and referred to (Continued on Page 4).
