Summertime. - Summertime will begin on September 25, when clocks throughout New Zealand will be advanced " halt an hour, and Will remain in force for approximately seven months.

Boxing at Te Awamutu. Messrs J. Robinson, “Battling” Snell and Lai. Dennett are participating in a boxing tournament to be held at Te Awamutu to-night. They are accompanied by -Messrs Tim Hickey ancl V. Alulhern.

An Outsize in Hapukas. A hapuka, which tipped the scales at 1151 b., measured oft. lin. in length and was 48in. in circumference, was landed with a. hand-line at Portland island on Wednesday by Mr Allan Nevill. It is claimed to bo the largest hapuka ever recorded as having been caught off this coast/ Altogether Mr Nevill. and a companion caught iOOOIb. of fish at Portland island on Wednesday.

New Zealand 1 Girl's Romance. A New Zealand girl, Miss Adah Winifred Kirby, • who bad not been able to waik for 14 years, went lor treatment to Mr Lancelot Louis Doel, a well-known Loudon osteopath. The treatment was successful and Miss Kirby became secretary to Mr Doel. They later became, engaged and were married in London on August (i. The bride’s father, Mr Edward Kirby, formerly lived at Shannon and Petone.

Wonderful Maize Crop. A big crop of maize from a variety whicfi lias grown only experimentally so far has been secured by Mr A. McPhail, Kaiteratahi, who has shelled 1700 bags from 70 acres. The variety is Early Matador, which has been raised from seed procured two years ago from the Bay *of Plenty. In the first season Mr McPiiail grew a. successful crop, and last spring he .made a selection of seed lrom his own crop, and put down a further 70 acres. This has now been shelled, and lias produced a yield of 88-0 bushels to the acre. . Other very heavy crops have been plucked in tile l (Osborne district but the yields are not yet known.

Native Rates. A. deputation consisting of Messrs G. Shalfoon and Itaimana Papuui waited on the Opotiki County Council on Friday asking that repairs he effected to the old Omaruinutn road. Cr McDonnell stated that no rates had been paid within miles. Mr Papuni said that he would be quite willing to pay rates if the road were fixed up. He alleged that a Native Department man had advised him not to pay rates unless the road was repaired. The council decided to allow Mr Papuui four days’ work on the road in payment cf rates. After the deputation had retired councillors expressed the opinion that the allegation concerning an official of the Native Department advising natives not to pay rates unless provided with good roads, should be followed up. It was decided to write to the Minister of Native Affairs on the subject.

Electoral Districts. Considerable trouble lias been taken to see that electors have been listed in the correct districts in the . Bay of Plenty and Gisborne electorates, and the returning officer/ at Gisborne, Mr J. N- Naider. employed professional assistance to determine whether the new boundary with the Pay of Plenty enclosed a. certain group, of settlors within tin 1 Gisborne district. The case was that of Quirk’s Mill, on the fringe or To Kooti’s Clearing, some miles west of Rakauroa. and , surveyors found that the mill and the dwellings of the employees were definitely within the Gisborne boundary. Pedersen's Mill and the To AA’ern. station homestead were as definitely included- .in the Pay of Plenty electorate. Electors are urged to sec that their names are registered as ,'tlie supplementary roll avill be closing at an early date. In view of the statement made by the Hon. AY. Nash, a fairly'early election is expected.
