NEW COLD REEFS
RICH FREE STATE FINDS GREAT IMPORTANCE SEEN JOHANNESBURG, June 20—Now gold discoveries which promise to become of great importance to the Inion have just been made around 1 , Odendaalsrust, in the Orange Free State. For some considerable, time it had been suspected that the Lower Witwatersrand Series, carrying the rich reefs worked by the Rand gold mines, extended into the Free State. Some months ago two young geophysicists began to investigate an area about 250 miles away from the Witwatorsrand where a payable reef intersection hsyl been made riW’a drill.' Their •s.urvey showed the presence of magnetic shales, usually associated with the Witwatorsrand > system at comparatively shallow depth. Drilling operations were startl'd at once and succeeded in intersecting several liigh-ly-payable reefs. Twenty miles of reef have already been proved by the geophysical survey and more boreholes are now being put clown to confirm values and depth:
