Cullen and Knight, chairman and; secretary respectively of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance. will be visiting Opotiki to-mor-row, and in the evening will deliver addresses to members of the Opotiki Carriers’ Association. POPULAR BASKETBALL DAN&E LARGE. ATTENDANCE. The popularity of dances organised by the committee and memners of the Opotiki Basketball Association was proved on Wednesday night when, in spite of the unfavourable weather which prevailed, there was an exceptionally large attendance at their dance held in the Lyric Hall. A bright programme of music was supplied by the Melody Masters’ Orchestra, with popular extras by Miss .1). Young. The duties of AI.C. were ably carried out by Mr Ei. Thompson. The hall was attractively decorated with greenery and colourful streamers and a happy time was spent by all present. Novelty dances were won by Mrs N. Guide and Me L. McDonald, Miss A. Lingnum and Mr. G. Snell. A statue waltz caused great amusement and was won by M'rs N. Guide and Mi' G. Snell. A dainty supper was served and the strains of the National Anthem were heard all too scon.

LABOUR PARTY CARD EVENING Another very successful card-even-ing, organised by the Opotiki branch of the Labour Party.,' was held at the residence of Air 'and Airs 1. G. Johnson, last evening, when there was a larger number than ever in attendance. Flag 500 was played. Air 'Tim Bodman acting as AI.C. The winners were JViTs H. Parkinson, Airs C. Tabb, Airs A. G. Stevenson, and Air T. Hennessy; consolation prizes going to Airs R. Skelton, Airs 13. Russell, Aliss Al. .Dockett and Aliss K. Lambert. T\fe hohler of the travelling flag was Airs <A. AAilson. Air Ci Pipe proved the winner of a competition. Alter supper had heen served, a most enjoyable time was brought to a close by Air Lammas moving a vote, of thanks to Air and All's Johnson lor their hospitality, which was carried in the usual way. VALEDICTORY \ St. John’s Hall presented an inviting scene on Wednesday night when the members of the Opotiki Choral Society held a. very successful and enjoyable social evening with Air and Airs A. H. Hilford as the guests of honour. Bamboo covered the walls, • and bowls of flowers arranged on stands about- the hall, lent a colourful note. The seats . were arranged in a semi-circle and .cosy carpets covered the floors. The evening opened with an item by the Choir, ‘.‘Come to the. Fair”. Joilly competitions anil games! were interspersed with vocal selections by Alessrs Rowland, Seville and Steele, and Rev. W.H. Wilson contributed an elocutionary item. At the special request of" Airs Hilford, • the choir gave a further number, “Hear Aly Prayer.’’ featuring A faster,s Holmes as the soloists. Airs Hilford acted as accompanist during the evening. ,\ delicious, supper was served by the ladies and Professor Puryer took the opportunity of presenting Airs Hilford with a charming floral bouquet. He spoke of Airs Hilford’s musical ability in eulogistic terms and voiced the regret of all members at the impending departure of both Air and Airs Hilford. Air Hilford being a valued member of the choir, and Airs Hilford the accompanist. The president of the Society, Air H. S. Holmes, endorsed Air Purver’s remarks, making mention of the great help Airs Hilford had been to the Society when it commenced, continuing her- faithful services throughout. Air Holmes extended the good wishes of all for Air and Airs Hilford’s future success and happiness and asked them to accept as a token of appreciation a handsome ease of silver fruit spoons, knives and fork. The presentation was greeted with the singing of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Air Hilford responded. The final item was a selection “Going Home” rendered by the c-hoir, after which the evening continued with impromptu games and competitions.
