Mock Court on Friday. The banquet and mock court to be held in St. John’s Hall will take place on Friday night next, as advertised.' 'Carden Party. The Methodist Ladies’ Guild have arranged a garden party and bi-cen-tenary tree planting afternoon, at the parsonage grounds for Saturday next. Particulars are advertised. Senzine Drums. As a result of the boat not being able to get into the Opctiki wharf last week a surprisingly large number of empty benzine drums has accumulated at the rear of the Northern Company’s buildings. The hundreds of drums give an idea of the large amount of benzine used in Opotilci. . Young Farmers Delayed. Owing to the bad weather and the state of the highways, the party of North Canterbury young farmers decided to stay an additional day in Gisborne and did not leave that town until Friday morning. The party intended making Hastings the next stopping place. New Wharf Structure. A good start has been made on the casting of the piles for the extension of the Opotilci wharf. A large number of cores has been made while eight piles Id” square and 30 feet long have been cast. The piles weigh two tons each and are made of tore re metal and sand with a 3 to 1 mixture of cement. Each pile uses about lit yards of metal, and will be left to harden for about two mouths before it can be driven, The contract is being undertaken by Mr F. G. Maliy.

Slip near Otoko. A fairly large slip was reported to have fallen on the- Opotiki-G is borne main highway last Friday, between Otoko and Rakauroa, blit a track was out through by the men stationed at Otoko. The continued wet weather brought many small slips down on the roads around Mataiwai, but they did not cause much trouble and only made the surface greasy for traffic.

Unlucky Settlers. For the fifth time this year the settlers near the mouth of the AVaipaoa river. Poverty Bay fiats, have had their land flooded as the result of the abnormal rainfall being experienced on the East Coast. Some of the farmers have decided to await drier and more settled weather before again grassing the silt-covered land.

It is expected, however, that grubs will he available for release in two specified localities during the current season.
