Mc.Dougall. of the local staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has received’ notice of his transfer on promotion to Wellsford, to take effect early next month. Mr McDougall has gained great popularity during iii.s stay in Opotiki, and keen regret juts been expressed at his impending departure. In musical and social circles he ”is well-known throughout the Bay of Plenty. 0 <-*■»* is- *■ A visitor to Opotiki is Hev. J. G. Lawton, -of Taupo\ avlio has been attending the tangi, on the Coast, of a ' well-known native, Mr Warakihi of file Wainpu family. The late 31 r Warakihi was of great- assistance to the missionaries in their work on the coast.
VALEDICTORY Mil AND 31 RS A. FORBES The home of 3lr and Airs A. !• orhes, who are leaving the Otara district, was recently visited hy a surprise party of their friends of Otara. A happy evening was spent in games and competitions, and several musical items were greatly enjoyed. During the evening, 3lrs John Black, as cue of the older residents, presented 31 rs Forhe.s with a handsome cheque from her many friends in Otara. The gift was accompanied by a charming floral bouquet. The presentation was greeted with the singing of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows”. 31 r Reece Forbes, who replied in the absence of Mr Forbes, thanked all present for the gift and their good wishes. Mrs Forbes also expressed her appreciation and spoke of the regret they felt at leaving their many old friends. “Auid Lang Syne” was sung at the conclusion of the evening. W.D.F.U. CARD EVENING To augment the funds of the Joc-al branch of the W.D.F.U. a very successful card evening was held at 31 r and 3lrs A. FI. 31artin’s residence on Friday. There was a good! attendance and a happy time was spent hy all. Flag 500 was played, the successful players being 3lrs Jones, Mrs 31cGregor, 31 r S. Maxwell and Mir A. E. .Martin. Consolation prizes were nwanled to Mrs Shalfoon, 31r Bingham, 31 rs Lovell and 31r s Hampton, and 31rs J. O’Sullivan jnr. was the winner of the travelling flag prize. After a dainty supper had been enjoyed, Mr Lammas proposed a vote of thanks to the host and hostess which was heartily, accorded.

first birthday party PAKOAYHAI MAORI WOMEN'S CLUB A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the Alaori Alission Hall last Wednesday, when the first birthday of the Pakowhai Alaori Women’s Club was celebrated. “Pakowhai” was the name by which Opotiki was first known. Airs Hata. president oi the eluli, cut the beautiful birthday cake and Afternoon tea was then served. A \ competition “Something from nothing”, produced many rlevcrlymade and useful articles. The winner was Airs Kawha whoso mat made from a sugar hag and old materials was very pretty. Airs L Bennett was the winner of a competition for an article made from a flour hag, the article made being an apron. The judges were Alesdames A. C. Hampton and A. Debreceny. The club meets on the first AVednesdav oi each month.
