ENGLISH STALLION FOR BAY

"LORD WA.RQ3N,” SON ~OF "HURRY ON" Sill IJ OF NEW Zl.i.v LAND CUP \. x*i.> Eu.: iJn. . j A local syndicate, comprising Mr Ueii, sonrl, or \iuuui.u, ana Aiessis At)oot Dios., ot UpotiUi, Jias tile* p.u'CluiSe ■ i.* uie ijCUtU xsiiviici 01 tnl* sfKcessnu iuignsli suunon, ".'Lord ’Warden, ana .ne uni arrive in ; the Bay towards tlie end or Lie present month. "i-jfmil -Warden" was imported to tlie Dominion ior the Soutii canterbury breeder, Air G. A. Kain, in who so private stud have been bred such notable horses .as the Alei bourne, and New Zealand Cup winner, Niglitmarch (how at the stud in Canterbury), tne last New Zealand Cup winner, Cerne Abbas i.a daughter of Loid Warden), Alarsa (Southland and Riverton Cups), Full Swing .(South-, iancl Oup, etc.), UiatOmous (Wellington Stakes, etc.), Blixten (.Rqsehill Guineas, 2nd. Australian St. Leger, etc.), Wiieriko* (a good winner in Australia and New Zealand, and now at the stud), Battle Colours (Timaiu Cup, etc.. Satisfy (D.J.C. AleLean Stakes, etc.), and a host of oilier winners.

Prior to Lord Warden, Air Kain had New Zealand’s champion stallion, Noiierino, at his Gladstone Park stud, and last year, following his policy of importing a fresh stallion every six years, lie brought out a good English performer in Alan’s Pal. whose sire, Alanna, won the English Derby bjr eight lengths, and whose dam is a liall-sistcr to an lr-

Deroy winner and is directly descended from the famous mare, Clielandry, the ancestress also of Australia’s champion sire, Heroic, the Alelbourne Cup winner, The J rump, etc. Alan’s Pal impressed Air Kain and leading South Island broedeis to, such an extent that Mr Kain decided to, dispose of Lord Warden, despite the success at the stud that the latter has beep .scoring. He has, however, numerous young mares and iillies' by him, and these he is breeding to Alan’s Pal. Last year. Air A. S. Elworthy, president of the Canterbury Jockey Club, secured the lease of Lord Warden for the season, but When it became known that it might be possible to purchase tlie horse outright, the local breeders commissioned Alessrs Wright. Stephenson and Co. Ltd. to negotiate for the possession of the

imported sire, and eventually the purchase was completed at a very substantial, figure. It is very seldom that a. proven sire is ever sold. Lord Warden.'is a-- horse of .exceptional breeding. ( He is sired by "Hurry On”, unbeaten. After retiring from the turf, without ■ •meeting with defeat, Hurry On had a brilliant career at the . stud, being as outstanding a decade ago, as Blandford has’ been, cF recent years. Hurry On sired three winners' of the great English classic race, the Derby. The iirst, Captain Cuttle, won the race in record time. Eventually he was sold for a record price to the Australian Government. Then came Coronach, who won both the'Derby and St. Leger and is now standing 111 England at a fee of 300 gns.-, and the third l was Call Boy- He sired many other great horses, and his daughters were also wonderfully successful; Black and Cresta Run winning the One Thousand -Guineas, and Toboggan and Pennyeomequick the Oaks. Hurry On himself won races up to vi miles, and eventually lie set the seal on his fame as cue of the great sires of all time by producing a winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, England’s famous long distance test which horses representing all nations attempt to win. This horse. Precipitation, was then retired to the stud at* a. lee of SCO gns., and it was- announced almost immediately that his services had been fully booked for throe years ahead; thus proving the value set on his blood in England. Hurry on was leading sire in England in 1926, audios stock have now won 3.54} races, and stakes totalling £324 512 Hi* died in 1930. His daughters are also proving invaluable, as they have so far produced, the winners of £137.671 in stakes, in tlie Dominion, lii*; sou,- Hunting Song, has headed the list of Dominion sires lor five successive years. World’s Greatest Female Line. Lord Warden," whose oldest stock are now five-year-olds, has sired winners already of every description cf race, from early two-year-olds to winners over 1} to 2 miles. His stock have won races in every part of New Zealand, and' in lour States in Australia, where they are distinctly popular, no less than six out <4 twelve of his yearlings sent to the last National sales being purchased by Australian breeders. Lord Ward oil, in addition to being a son of the great Hurry On, c-omes from one of the greatest female lines in the English Stud Book. He is a direct* descendant of the great mare, Memoir, a famous stayer, which not only won the. great test for the fillies of her

' . . -' v, : ' .• •. year, the English Oaks, 1} lhiles, hut defeated ail the crack colts of her year in the St. Leger, lif miles. Memoir was by the greatest sire of all time, St. Simon. Her La Ficelle, won the Oaks,.. St. Leger and Ascot Gold Gup; a brother, John O’Gaunt, is the aiicestor of jSvvynford, the sire of the great Blandford. Another sister, Bareness "La Fleclie, is tlie- ancestress of the brilliant- sire, Beau Pere, and of Spearhead, sire of the Melbourne t Clip winner, Spearfelt, while the hallsister, Maid Alarian,' is the dam of Polymelus, who wa s premier sire of England on five occasions and is the ancestor of one of,, tlie great sire lines of the day, Phalaris, Fairway. Pharos and Manila all being descended from him. Related to This Year’s Derby Winner. * When Lord Warden.*was imported to New Zealand, it was known he was one of the best bred horses ever brought here. His clam, Hythe, had produced good winners and she was by bt. Simon’s great son,. Chaucer, whose daughters had already produced such famous horses and sires as Hyperion of tlie Derby and St. Leger), Fairway and Pharos (both champion sires of England), Colorado (winner of £30.’359 in stakes), unbeaten Colombo (by Manna). etc. Chaucer is the grandsirc of this year’s English Derby winner, the French bred Bois Roussel. Since then, Hush, a younger member of this family closely re kited ; to Hythe, has added further to the lame of. the family, for lately her grand-daught-er, Udiapar, has won the Oaks; another, in Ut Alajettr, has wen the Cesareyvitch. ITmidar the Jockey Club Stakes. , Ukrania the French Oaks, Uganda ,the 'French Oaks, all of these noted performers heiilg bred by H.H. Tho Aga Khan. Another member of the same family in Yakimour is the fastest..fiby in England this season. Bred by-' the- Aga Khan she won the Fitzgerald Stakes at Newmarket, by eight lengths, at her first start. Aliss Gunning 11, the grand-dam of Lord Warden, is sired by* the great Carbine, son of . Musket, and Carbine is the grand-sire of the dam of this year’s Derby l m winner, Bois Roussel, and this latest} victor in the great classic, although bred in France, directly descends* .also on the sire’s side from Chaucer, the grandsire of Lord Warden. Musket was the greatest sire ever known, in this part of the world and his -son, Cqi'bihe, through his descendants, Spearmint, gpion Pop, Felstead and r l he Buzzard, is still the greatest influence in the whole world in ptodueing stay-

ere. Lord Warden, it '-should, he known, is directly * descended t-rom a '.halt-sister to Musket’s dam, so it would not be pqssible to secure a horse from a- greater family. .. '' Success at -the Stud. Lord warden . lias been sparingly used, as Mr Lain always limits the number of mares mated with his stallions. He is a most impressive 'stallion of great physique, splendid size and quality, and a golden chestnut in colour. Most of his. stock follow him in all respects. The first of liis sons, Custodian, alter winning the MiddlePark Plate at Riccarton, was taken to Australia for. the Derby but went off colour, after running second at w.f.a. in the early classic race. Then came Gustos, >vho .won the Dunedin J.C. Champagne Stakes; the Maiiawatu R.C. " Next, Cerne Abbas, one of liis fillies, proved the best staying three-year-old of the year by winning both the Great Northern Oaks and the St. Leger. Others, by him, to win both here and in Australia included Palustrias, Viking, Lady Ivyra, Myriam, Bonny Glow, Jack Alloy, Heloise, Yale, Sailing Lady,' Fireguard, Convivial, Red Dragon, etc. This year, he has had a great season as Protector wen the Avondale Stakes arid. Auckland' R. C. Welcome Stakes, Ortyz won the John Grigg. Stakes at. Ashburton, Cerne Abbas won the New Zealand Cup, Normal won the 1 V.A.T.C. Debutante Stakes of £I,OOO in Tlelbourne, and broke the record at Moonee Valley in the St. Albans Handicap, 48§secs. lor four furlongs, and others by him have scored' all over the Dominion and in Australia. His advent, therefore, to this part of the world should do a great deal to aid in the development of the thoroughbred horse, and 1 no doubt many North Island breeders in other parts will be ready to avail themselves of his services. Messrs Bell and Abbot Bros, are to be congratulated on 'their enterprise.
