PUMPKINS RECORDS

RECORD EASILY ECLIPSED ' THE 22oLB:~“JOE LOUIS” Pumpkins grown in the Gisborne district appear to be swelling to larger and larger sizes , every year, and the 2251 b. record pumpkin at the recent Gisborne winter show was almost 20H). better than the previous record and 511 b. heavier than the winner in 1934.

Some misapprehension appears to exist regarding what was the previous record-breaker. A search of the files, states the Gisborne Herald, reveals that the record until this year was held by Mr J. Haskins with a pumpkin which tipped the scales at 205 i-lb. That was in 1936, and easily eclipsed by 151 b. a record which had stood lor three years in the name of Mr O. Tietjen.

Tlio' weight of the second pumpkin in this year’s class was 1991 b., which is the third heaviest ever entered at the Show, and the weight of the third was 1821 b.. all first three awards being secured by the one exhibitor, Mr J Atkin. The average weight for the three was 2021 b., creating yet another record for the Show and, so far as is known,.for New Zealand in the best average weight of three field pumpkins. When Mr Greig won the prize in 1932, he had five pumpkins which had an average weight of 1751 b.
