Irving, Edgecombe, have lett lor 1 e Arolia and Auckland. -x- x- * * x- * xAlr Peter Barlow, chief surveyor at Napier, who was stationed at Opotiki many years ago and left this district in 1914, arrived in Opotiki yesterday and is renewing old acquaintances. Air■ Barlow has just visited the Galatea and Rangitaiki districts in the course of a trip, which will include the Gisborne district. After leaving the Opotiki district at the tiipc of the outbreak of the Great War, Air Barlow returned in 1918 and surveyed the AA'oodlands Soldier Settlement. ■if * * vf * xAlr. H. L. Gordon, of Tairua. and Air G. N. Gordon, of New Plymouth, have been appointed to the staff of the Opotiki District High School. ■if ff -X- x- X- X v After 1 some fourteen years as a member of the teaching staff of the Opotilii District High School, Air A. H. Hi I ford has received notice of his transfer to Ait. Alaunganui School, where he has been appointed headmaster. Prior to his appointment at the Opotiki School, Air. Hilford taught at AVaiotahi and Otara schools. It is not expected that his new appointment will take effect until the beginning of next-term. /News of the impending' departure of Air and Airs Hilford will be received with regret by their. many friends in 'Opotiki, as will the departuremf; -AT. ft; Grant, who will accompany her daughter.
LABOUR PARTY CARD EVENING The third of a scries of card cvtmillf's, organised l>v the members of: the local branch of the. Labour Party, was held at flr.s Burgess’ residence on Monday evening. A jolly social evening arranged by members of St. John’s Girls Auxiliary was recently held in ot. John’s Hall which was charmingly arranged in the club’s colours 0 f blue and gold, wattle and blue hydrangeas l/eing used for the decorations.
A very enjoyable musical programme included vocal selections by Airs Duff and Air Rowland, a vocal duet by Aliss Morgan and Airs L. Sinclair, violin solo by Air S. Pearce and an elocutionary item by Ah’ Dunlop. ' Several orchestral selections were also contributed by AEvssrs AV. Young, R. Parks, and S. Pearce, and novel and amusing competitions occupied the remainder of the evening.
Admission, to the [unction was gained in a novel manner, each guest being given, a small sock in which they were asked to place pennies corresponding to the size of their shoe. The socks were then emptied into a huge stocking. -A dainty supper was served by. the members, after which opportunity was taken by Aliss Betty Thompson to thank those present for their donations.
A happy function was concluded with the singing of Aulcl Lang Syne.
