Gcok County Rates. The Cook County Council at its monthly meeting decided not to reduce expenditure on .plant and machinery, as suggested at the previous meeting, but to cut down the amount spent on county roads by £750 and on district roads by £9OO, making a total reduction of £ISOO. At the previous meeting, the county engineer, Mr K. F. Jones, was instructed to investigate the question of reducing the works estimates to provide for the same rate as last year, 6|d. “In view of the fact 'that modern machinery used efficiently considerably reduces the cost of work,” the engineer stated, “in my opinion it is desirable that the item. shown for machinery be retained and a reduction be made oil a pro rata, basis over the items provided for in the estimates under the heading of county roads and district roads.” The council decided to strike the same rate as last year. 1 . v y
