NO MORE LICENSES

TAXIS IN GISBORNE COUNCIL’S DER^LON .. No taxi licenses are to lie issued in Gisborne at present, . as a result of a decision Minnie by the Gisborne Borough Council, '"on- Tuesday night. The Mayor, Mr I>. W. Coleman, M.P., referring to a recent application for an additional license, said that the borough had its quota of taxi licenses, and it was-a matter for the council to decide whether the number should be increased. He felt that there should be no increase.

Councillors expressed the opinion that there was a- sufficient number of licenses at present, and the council decided not to grant an increase.

Cr H. E. Maude referred to a recent advertisement relating to taxi fares. He pointed out that the Borough Council had never fixed' the taxi fares, which had been agreed to by .the taxi proprietors in conference with the council. The Mayor said that legally speaking the council did fix the fares, but only after a conference with the taxi proprietors, and the council had not had a request to amend the fares.
