Health District;. For the weds ended at noon *on Monday only one ease of notifiable disease diphtheria, was reported in the East Coast health district. One death was reported from tuberculosis. Large Rail-Car. It is expected in railway circles that tine New Plymouth-Wellington rail-car seating upwards of 50 passengers and at present under construction, will be in, operation by the end of this month or very early in July. Hockey Party. /A large party, composed chiefly of hockey players passed through Opotiki on Monday for Wairoa to take part in the liui being held there. The hockey players were from Te Kalia. Several other teams will take part in the hockey tournament. Travelling Stock. Sheep and cattle mobs passing through Opotiki this week have had a rather bad effect on the Wellington Street 'roadway between St. John and ■Church Streets. As a result of the wet weather the street has been badly cut up and the sides in particular are in a very bad state. A Cold Morning. The Opotiki district experienced a real taste of winter yesterday morning. following a very heavy frost in the night. Early risers found the district covered with a white layer hut this was soon dispersed when rain fell just before daybreak. A bitterly cold southerly wind sprang up later in the morning and the day was bitterly cold until the evening, when conditions gradually became milder. 1 lie eaily morning rain had the effect of preventing the frost damaging plants. Post-box Removal. Since the recent collision at the intersection of St. John and Wellington streets, the Post Office hex. which had been, knocked off the telegraph pole, has been removed to a much better position on tin' western side of the road. The street was in good order when the box was shifted hut travelling stock have made conditions very muddy about the box with water lying o,n both sides. A .load of gravel is badly needed at the spot to enable those posting letters to do so without stepping into the mud. The. Weather. Thb following weather forecast for the 24 hours commencing- at 9 a.m. to-day was issued by: the meteorological office The indications are' for moderate to strong easterly winds, later decreasing. Weather still changeable with passing showers at first in many places hut improving gradually. Temperatures cold. Seas rough hut later moderating. General situation : An intense auti-cycloiie non extends from the south Tasman Sea across tlie South Island, but there lias been little change l of pressure in the north.
