“MAYTIME” Topping even their triumphs in ‘Naughty Marietta” and ‘‘Rose Marie,” Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy,- America’s favourite singing stars, now come to the De Luxe screen in “Maytime,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s lavish adaptation of the Rida Johnson Young operetta which - was one of the memorable hits of the New York stage.
Directed hv. Robert Z. Leonard, the man who gave hlmgoer s “The Great Ziegfeld,” with a wide variety of songs by Sigmund Romberg and Herbert Stothart, and with a brilliant supporting cast headed by John Barrymore m his first appearance since “Romeo and Jhliet”—the new M-G-M musical opens as one of the' outstanding sensations of the new movie season. The famous song hit of the original play. “Sweetheart, Will You Remember:-"” was retained for the film version, with the remainder of tlm music divided between the sentimental and operatic. Miss MacDonald sings two complete operatic arias and portions of others.. Eddy lias three novelty songs. “Students’ Drinking Song,” “Vive L - Opcra” and “Virginia Ham and Eggs.” Together, the two stars sing an -American folk song for the first time, the'touching “Carry Me Back to Old Virginity.”
The story opens with Miss MacDonald appearing in old lady make-up, trying to solve the romantic problems of Lynne Carver and Tom Brown by telling the girl of her own life so she can choose between love.and a. career.
The story then goes back and shows Miss MacDonald as a prim a donna, and Eddy, as a young singing student.
