CARROLL MEMORIAL PRESENTATION OF GUP Initial ceremonies in connection, witli tlie dedication of the nejr carved* house in Wairoa, erected in memory of the late Sir James Carroll, will be held oji June I'3, when large numbers of visiting Maoris will be welcomed to. the marae at "Waihirere, near Gisborne, with traditional rites including the liakas and action songs on which members of the local tribes have been concentrating attention, some weeks. The liui will reach its climax on June 18, when the actual opening- of the carved house will be performed by the Hon. F. Langstone, acting-Minister of Native Affairs.

A number of distinguished visitors, will be welcomed at the marae, invitations having been extended to lead-ing-figures in Parliamentary life and among the permanent officials of tho « Native Department. ' . - Sports and! competition fixtures will enliven the days and nights leading; up to the opening .of tlie memorial house, and teams from several districts of the North Island will compete in hockey tournaments for men and women. Choral competitions are. to be included in the evening programmes, and due provision has been made for- the spiritual the celebrations, the Bishop of Aotearoa, this lit. Rev. F. A. Bennett, having been asked to arrange for interdenominational services. , Maori King May ba Present. The probability that the Maori King and a strong delegation .of "Waikato tribesmen being present at the liui has" aroused keen interest among tlio Ngatikahungunu people, and elaborate preparations are being made to signalise this initial visit ,of King Koroki in a fitting manner.

Presentation of the Ahuwhenua. Cup, the trophy presented by Lord Bledisloe for competition among Maori farmers, will provide another feat-ure.-of interest. The trophy..was won this year by two farmers in the lliiatoki and Tor ere districts and will bo held conjointly. This presentation, will-follow the official opening of the memorial house and the luncls&on. to distinguished guests.
