COUNTY COUNCIL

monthly meeting The monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council was held in the County Chambers this morning. Present: Air IV. A. Gault- (chairman), Councillors G. J. Neilson, W. A. Butler, T. W. Burke, 0. IV. Fairweather, R. A. Hedley, A. E. Blake, S. Aiaxwell, J. T. Clark, C. Black, J. ALcDonnell, Air J. T. Alerrv (county clerk), and Air IV. IV. Upton (county engineer). The balance sheet as presented was settled. A welcome to Cr C. IV. Fairweather was extended by the chairman. Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward Correspondence Ruatumi Road. —The Alinister of Public Works wrote notifying that a free grant of £475 for work on the more difficult crossing over the small inlet, had been made. —it was decided to write thanking the AL’inister. IVaiotahi Bridge.—Airs E. Smith, on behalf of the IVaiotahi School Committee wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the bridge crossing near the IVaiotahi Hall. Cr Burke suggested that netting be put on the bridge to prevent children being pushed through the railings-.as the water was very deep. The engineer was asked to report. IVharf Control.—The borough council wrote enclosing correspondence relating to negotiations between the council and the Opotiki Dairy Association. on the 1 question of cool storage for butter. Mr Gault reported on representations made last night to the Hon. P. Fraser, Alinister of Alarine, and said that the council received a favourable hearing. Air. Aierry also explained what took place at the meeting, stating that the Alayoi thought the borough, council would have'no objection to the county having a share of the wharf control. It was resolved to write to the Borough Council suggesting a special meeting he held to discuss the subject with the whole council as early as possible.

Golf C'luli’s Request.—A lengthy discussion took place concerning the request of the Opotiki Golf Club that the club provide the pipes and the council do the work in connection with a crossing to the links. Cr Aiaxwell objected to the council doing work that it would not do for private individuals. Cr AleD.onnell moved that the council abide by the rule that no crossings be provided. I his was seconded by CT. Butler. Other councillors supported 1 the request but upon a show .of hands being taken the motion was carried by seven votes to four.

Coast Road—The district engineer, Tauranga, wrote notifying the coun-

cil that the ; ■ Opotiki-Te Araroa main highway had'been approved for revocation, and asking that the £4OO bo paid in monthly instalments. Blackberry Pest.—The Automobile Association wrote pointing out thatthe blackberry menace was gaining a very strong bold on the Auckland Province roads.—-The matter vu's inferred to Air Kent. Kaihikitia Settlement—The district engineer wrote re the formation of a road to the Kaihikitia Settlement. Settlers guaranteed -three years’ rates in advance if the road was proceeded with. The clerk was instructed to reply stating that the land was not on the valuation roll. Registration of 'l,'rucks. —Cr Butlersaid that nothing had boon done concerning the registration of private motor"' trucks although a promise had been made by the Minister of Transport. It was decided to write again on the subject. Dangerous Hedges.—Cr Ale Donne! I drew attention to hedges which needed trimming. It was decided to notily property owners. Roles on Roads.— Cr Maxwell referred to Woles near culverts on the sides of the Woodlands road, it was decided to mark the spots with white posts. Accounts totalling £2254 were passed for payment.
