Danse in Lyric Hall. The Opotiki branch of the National Party will hold a dance in the Lyric ,Hall to-night. Picture's Commence Earlier. Commencing from to-night, the evening sessions at the l)e Luxe Theatre will begin at 7.45. St. Mary’s Social. St. Mary’s Church will hold a social in the Lyric Hall on Wednesday, June 15. The music will be supplied by the Melody Masters Orchestra. School P layette. The Opotiki District High School pupils will present the plavette “Princess Chrysanthemum” in the Regent Theatre on Friday, June lOtlx. Reserves may be booked at Cresswell’s. Business Change. Mr S. N. Cliatfield announces that lie has taken over Mr A. Stephenson’s mercery store, which will be run in conjunction with the Opotiki Cash Drapery. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be half-price days. Autumn Wether Fair. Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd. will hold their autumn fair in the Opotiki saleyards on Tuesday next, June 7, at 1 p.m. Two thousand wethers will be offered. Particulars will be advertised in Friday’s issue. Representative Football.
A Parata Cup football match will be played at Opotiki on Monday next (King’s Birthday holiday), when the Whakatane representatives will meet Opotiki on the reserve. A novelty for Opotiki will be a curtain-raiser between third-grade teams. Social and Dance. The deputy-leader of the Government. Hon. P. Fraser, who will be accompanied by Ml’s Fraser, will be the guest at a social and dance to be held in the Wattle Tea-rooms to-morrow (Thursday) night. Cards will be available for- non-dancers. Health District. For the week ended at noon on Monday two cases of notifiable disease. one each of typhoid lever and puerperal fever, were reported’ in the East Cape health district. One death was reported from typhoid fever. Clay Bird Shoot. The following team has been selected to represent the Opotiki Rod and Gun Club in the clay-bird shoot to he held at Rotorua on Monday: Messrs Jack Ross, J. Young. J. A. MeCaldon. M. Ross, A. Lowe. Jim Ross. R. Mcllwraith. J. O’Sullivan, J. Whitfield. The delegates to attend the conference' will be; Messrs J. MeCaldon. R. Mcllwraith. G. S. Moody, W. Dods and G. L.' Day. Cub Mistress Farewelied. Opportunity was taken at the weekly parade of the Opotiki Cub Pack to farewell the Cub-mistress, Miss J. Wilson, who leaves Opotiki this month for Wanganui. A special tea had been arranged to mark the occasion and the assistant- cub-mistress, Miss JWebb, on behalf of the Pack, presented Miss Wilson with a charming china trinket howl. Miss* Webb expressed regret at Miss Wilson’s retirement as cub-mistress and expressed the hope that she would he happy in her new surroundings. Miss Wilson thanked the members .of the pack and Miss Webb for the dainty gift, and mentioned the pleasure had experienced while acting as cub-mis-tress. The remainder of the evening was spent, around the camp-fire, where the pack joined in singing camp-fire songs. The. Weather. The following weather forecast for the 84 hours commencing at 9 a.m. to-day was issued by. the meteorological office The indications are for light to moderate and variable winds later north-westerly • predominating and freshening somewhat. Weather mainly fair but occasional scattered and mainly light rains. Probably temperatures mild. Seas slight to moderate. General situation: pressure has risen somewhat over the Dominion and especially to t-ho eastward. A series of slight, westerly depressions has been crossing the South Island, andi a deep one is now located over south-eastern Australia.

Cook County Rates. At a * special meeting of the Coolc County Council held at Gisborne yesterday, the council decided, to levy rates for the current year on the basis of 6fd in the £l, which is the same as last year. Infantile Paralysis Case. , In his report to tlie Opotiki Borough Council at last night’s meeting, the health inspector, Mr M. J. Fogarty, reported: that there had been one case of infantile paralysis. TliV patient hsj.d been admitted to hospital and the home 'disinfected.. Car Leaves Road. A car driven by Mr J. Inskip travelling between Opotiki and Taneatua, left the road early last night on 'the Nukuhou North side of the Oliope turnoff. The car went over a six foot bank and turned on its side. None of the occupants was injured and the car was practically undamaged. A service-car which passed a "few minutes later brought the travellers hack to Opotiki. Cat’s Swimming Exploits. The antipathy of eats to water apparently does not apply to the exploits of n. cat at Otara. The cat in question had three kittens but- two of them were' taken to a new home aeross the Otara river. Several days ago the cat was observed out on a willow over the water and was then seen to plunge into the water, which is very deep at the spot, andl swim across the river. Then it was noticed that the two kittens were on a gravel bank ou the other side of the river, and the cat went over to them. Since then the cat has regularly swam the river twice daily to feed her family on both sides of the river. \ Deputation. Mrs A. Debreceny waited ou the Opotiki Borough Council last night in support of a petition from residents in. Bridge Street who asked that the street and footpath be attended to. Mrs Debreceny pointed out that the footpath was in a very muddy condition at present and the street was very rough. It was also pointed out to the council that the section of street carried a very heavy volume of through traffic and the dust nuisance in dry weather was very bad. The council agreed that the street needed attention but it- was' pointed out that the council was hoping to have the section declared a main highway so that the street could be cut down to the permanent level and then sealed 1 . Ihe question of attention was left in the hands of the works committee.
