Light Frosts. Several light frosts have been experienced in the Opotiki district the last fe\v days and cold night temperatures are being experienced with fine warm days. Temperatures at 9 a.ui. on Saturday at various places in the North. Island were: Auckland oO degrees, Tauranga 47,- Opotiki 45, East Cape 53, Cisborne 50,. Napier 51, and Wellington 48. ' Flowering Taro. The. taro plant is Airs Warren’s garden; which recently flowered, has created considerable interest and so many have viewed it, that Mrs Warren. has' taken, the plant to Airs Quirk’s shop where it may be seen by any who are interested. The first flower on the plant has now faded and gone to seed but there is another flower now on the plant. County Election. An election to fill an extraordinary vacancy on the Hospital Board for a county representative will be held on Wednesday. There is only one vacancy to be filled' and the candidates offering are -Messrs El. J. Baigent and G. N. Yanstonc. The polling places will be the County Chambers, Opotiki ; the Post Office, Kntarere.; the Native Department’s store, Waiawa ; and the polling hours 9 a.in. to 0 p.m. The Hunting Season. Great interest is being taken in tlie opening of the Opotiki Hunt Club’s season on Wednesday next. The bunting ground will be on the Woodlands’ properties which proved so popular last season. An energetic band of members have been busy obtaining rails and erecting hurdles on tin: properties. The pack is said to be very fit and there is great enthusiasm amongst the members, which points to a successful season. The Weather. The following weather forecast for the 24 hours commencing at 9 a .in. to-day was issued by the meteorological office: —The indications are for light to moderate north-east winds, prevailing. Tests have already been made with the equipment and messages have been exchanged , with Palmerston North aerodrome and also with a Union Airway’s plane in flight over Kapiti. Sowing in Esk Valley. The work of sowing grass seed in the F!sk Valley; is being carried out as fast as seed becomes available. ’The Public Works Department is co-oper-ating with the Department- ol Agriculture in levelling some of the areas which were scoured' out by the flood waters and also in getting water away from the areas below the general level of the valley. A tractor drainer is being employed in this task and also for releasing impounded water at the Bayview end of the valley. W lieu this water is released further areas will lie ready for sowing.
