Pig Sale.
The fortnightly pig sale will be held in the Opotiki saleyards on Monday next. - Dance at' Waiotafoi. A dance, under the auspices of the Waictahi Women’s Institute will be held in the Waiotahi Hall on Friday night. • j,' Minister’s Visit. During liis visit to the Bay of Plenty electorate this week, fhe Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, will give an address at Matawai on Friday night. The Minister will not speak at Opotiki. Care of Reserves. For the purpose of mowing borough reserves and riverbank plots, the Gisborne Borough Council lias decided to purchase a set of triplex mowers at a cost of £199 10s and a tractor costing £2481 12s 6d. Light Frost. A light frost, the first experienced in the borough this year, u'as registered this morning. The first frost last year was very late, being registered on the Ist. June, and was an exceptionally heavy one.
The Weather. The following weather forecast for the 24 hours commencing at 9 a.m. to-day was issued by the meteorological- office :—The indications ore for moderate -south-easterly winds prevailing. Expect a few scattered showers in northern areas, but mainly fair. Temperatures milder. Blarcaneter rising. Seas smooth to moderate. Cost of Bijilding. Permits for 11 private houses were given for the last four months in Gisborne, the total estimated cost 'being £10,375, The average cost of the houses is £943 each. Houses for the same period in the previous year cost £796 each. , FcotbSiJl Keensss. Surprising keenness is being shown by youths in the third grade football competition in Opotiki. In the match played on Connelly’s paddock on Saturday, the Woodlands team had several youths on the sideline who had been unable to secure a game, there being no difficulty in placing a full team on the field. With such keenness being displayed Ilugby football should have a bright future in the district. Election Declaration. /At the monthly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Electric Power Board, held yesterday, it was decided to write t 0 the Alinistor advocating that there should be no declaration of election of candidates until after the polling day when all declarations should be made. It was decided to point out the difficulties which might arise from the present method and draw attention to two declarations in Opotiki where the office of chairman was effected. Accident Proves Fatal. The death took place yesterday of 31 r John Wrath (Ralph) Grayson, aged 34 years. In May last deceased suffered spinal injuries as a result cf being crushed beneath a falling tree at Matawai. Ho was a. patient in the Cook hospital for 10 months, and throughout his long illness bore bis sufferings with great fortitude. Deceased leaves a widow and three young children. He leaves also cue sister, Mrs Stuart Drake, Opotiki, and three brothers, all of Ormond. Farmers' Visit. A party of ICO farmers will visit Opotiki early in June in the course of a tour of the North Island. The party will travel from Gisborne in special buses and will bring their own cocks with them. . Accommodation for 76 members of the party has already been arranged at hotels and boarding houses in Opotiki and billeting is required for the, other 24 members of the party. At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council the Mayor was asked to make inquiry ics to the party’s visit.
