Although an effort was made to save the sheep the water rose so quickly that a large number were drowned. The water was three feet deep on the road. - Nearer to Opotiki on Fryer’s, flat the road was also covered with water while residents returning from Opotiki nad to remove logs from the highway."

The road crossing; the mud-hat near Kutarere was also under water for the first time for over twenty years. The sea also washed over the read at Torere but very little damage was. done.
