Cup Presented. Mil- R. Bennett, captain of the Old Boys’ Junior Rugby team has notified the Opotiki Rugby Union that the Old Boys’ Junior Football Club lias donated a silver cup for competition among the third grade teams. It is very pleasing to see a junior team so interested in third grade football and the players are to be commended for their spirit and thoughtfulness. FlowSr Show. > The annual autumn flower show, held under the auspices of the Opotiki Sunshine League will be held in the Lyric Hall on Thursday. The weather conditions have not been very favourable during the past few weeks for flower cultivation, but with a special effort, exhibitors should be able to make the show a: complete success. i Territorial Training. Twelve local Territorials returned from Papakura on Saturday after a week under canvas. The main tactical exercises were the defence of Auckland. The outstanding feature of the camp was the mechanisation of the regiment, troops travelling everywhere by bus or lorry, andi thus eliminating' route marches. Sheepowners’ Federation. A branch of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation lias recently been formed in. Auckland, covering the entire Auckland Province. Mr H. S. Holmes has been appointed a member of the executive to act for this district and invites anyone desiring inionuation on the subject to communicate with him. Mr Holmes will attend a general meeting of the Auckland Branch of the Federation to he held in Auckland on 6th. May. Transport Authority./ A meeting of the Transport Licensing Authority was held last week at the Opotiki .Courthouse, when Mr Phelan, chairman of the No. 1 transport Licensing Authority, presided. Mr Phelan said 1 he would ]ike to see one big Association for the whole oi the Bay of Plenty, including Opotiki. Whakatane, Tauranga, Te Puke, Taupo. etc. He was pleased to see the Opotiki and Whakatane- Associations working harmoniously. Mi- Phelan considered that there wore plenty of lorries in the Bayi of Plenty and lie had no intention of issuing new licenses at the present time.
Loans’ Board Representative. Mr C. L. Grange, a representative of the Local Government Loans Board was hi Opotiki on b riday in connection witli the Borough’s Council's request for authority t 0 take a poll on a proposed loan for the municipal buildings. Mr Grange was accompanied by Mr It. H. P. tionayne. district engineer, Tauranga. The Mayor. 31 r G. S. Moody, and members of the borough council were interviewed and the proposed site for the buildings was inspected. The county clerk (31 r J. T. 31erry) was also interviewed on the subject. 3.1 r Grange will report back to the Loans’ Board after which the Board will make its decision known to the borough council. Circus on coast. Sole Eros. Circus which recently visited Opotiki attracted considerable interest when it played at Te Kaiia. On leaving Te Kaha.. the Keren river presented the first difficulty for the trucks but with the assistance of the elephant a safe crossing was made, ciowever as the truck pulling the trailer which contained the dynamo was climbing the steep bank oil the other side of the river, the- trailer broke away and rolled down the hank. Onto more the elephant was* brought .into use and the trailer brought back to the road. On another occasion a truck broke down on a. hill and was pushed to the top by the elephant. A Coast resident’s VS.Ford became ■duck /on the road, but the ear was helped out by the elephant which placed its head against the hub-cap of the spare wheel. When, the elephant took Jiis head front the wheel it was found that the hub-cap had been flattened out. As this is the first occasion many of the Coast Maoris have seen an elephant it attracted much attention.
