Shipping. The motor-ship Waiotahi arrived in Opotiki last night and is scheduled to leave for Auckland to-morrow. Pig Sale. A The fortnightly Opotiki pig sale will be held in the Opotiki saleyards on Monday next. Drainage Board. Nominations of candidates for the Waiotahi Drainage Board will close on Friday, 7th. May at noon.

Dcig Trial Dance. The annual Dog Trial Club’s dance will be held in the Waioeka Hall tonight and shoiil c l draw the usual big crowd, this function being one of the .most looked-for dances in the district.

Mayor Re-elected Unopposed. The Mayor, Mr G. S. Moody, has been; re-elected unopposed as" Mayor of Opotiki. Mr 'Moody has served as Mayor of Opotiki for a total of 15 years. Stag Shot. Mr H. Eason, who was a member of a party which was engaged in ueer stalking near Lake Rotoelm, was successful in shooting a. fine fifteen-point-er. the head of which' he is having mounted. Milk Price Increased. . As from Sunday next, the price of milk in Opotiki will be increased to 6d per quart. It has been the usual practice to make, an increase of Id per quart in the winter months. The price of cream has been increased to 2/- per quart. The price of milk was increased some time ago to 5d per quart for the summer months. Clearing Sale. An important clearing sale will ho held on the farm, Verrall’s Road, on Thursday, 19th. May, when the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Go. Ltd. will sell by public auction the dairy taken over with property recently purchased from Air. A. E. A’. Jeffery by ALr. J. T. Paul. Air Paul is selling the herd so that it might be replaced with pedigree Jerseys from his Toa Toa property. Excema in Stock. Eixcema has attacked dairy herds and sheep in the Opotiki district, but it is not expected that the trouble will become serious as the Opotiki district did not suffer through a dry spell and there was a good 'growth of grass right throughout the district. The tliseiise is only occurring where grass had been eaten well down, enabling a new growth of young grass to appear. •

Opotiki l Rainfall. With only one more day to go the rainfall for the month of April has reached the high figure of 7.02 inches. Rain lias been recorded on. 15 days. After the long spell of sunny- weather, tiie month has been remarkable for the lack of sunshine. A fairly heavy gale was experienced last niglit accompanied by heavy . showers. A number of short interruptions occurred in the power supply during tin* evening. New Bridge. Good progress has been made by the contractor for the new iCaiferatahi bridge on the Opotiki-Gisborne main highway. A large number of men is working on the job and the site, is a scene of activity. Many piles have been made on both hanks of the river, and a number are partly buried by silt from the recent flood'. The completed structure will lie a. two-way reinforced concrete bridge of six spans. Three Chairmen Retire.

The borough and county council nomiivivtions reveal a unkpie position. Tli'h chairman of the Bay of PlentyPower Board has not sought re-elec-tion, and the same applies to the chairmen of the. Opotiki Hospital Board >Mr. F. J. Short) and the Opotiki County Council (Air J. H. Reid). The decision of these three well-known, public- men not to seek reelection will lie received with, considerable regret by the public of Opotiki, as their services have been greatly appreciated, and their places will he hard, to fill.

The AVaiotalii AVomen's Institute will hold a dance in the AA 7 aiotahi Hall on Friday, Alay 13. The Kit Kat Orchestra will supply, the music. Tui Again in Commission. j The East Coast Airways’ service will resume normal running to-day. when the Tui, wliich disabled one of its engines last week, will again come into commission. A spare engine has been fitted to the Tui. Yesterday both planes, made trips to Palmerston North. The Coast Road. The Bay of Plenty side of the East Coast road escaped the big storm which was experienced on the Poverty Bay side a feW days ago. From Hicks Bay the road is stated to he in good order, and from Cape Runaway to Opotiki the road l is,said to bo almost as good as the best of the summer months. Opotiki County Valuation. Two more counties in 1 the East Coast district will be revalued this year. They are the Cook and Opotiki counties. Opotiki’s last- revaluation was in 1930, and Air AY. Graham, Gis- . borne, and Air Ei. A- Meredith, Rotorua, will have charge of the field work. In this case, also, the new valuations are required to lie ready by March 31. Busy Air Service. The air services running between Gisborne and Hastings have been well patronised during the flood period and one of the big Union Airways planes lias been used on the service. During two days 116 passengers were carried to and from Hastings. Hie big D.H. 86 plane has been carrying full loads of 12 passengers and lias been making the trip in from 40 to 50 minutes. Telegraphic Dislocation. During the stormy period over the past few days, ' Gisborne experienced trouble with telegraphic communication with outside centres and tpe Gis- , bqrnerOpotiki hue to carry a heavy volume of messages. Even this line gave trouble at times owing to breaks. Aiails from Gisborne 'northwards were not interrupted to any great extent, , the road being blocked for only a comparatively short period, when 15 feet of water was over one of the bridges a few miles on the Opotiki side of Te Karaka. Use was made of the D.H. 86 air liner for carrying the south mails.
