Supplementary Roll. The district electors supplementary roll for the Borough of Opotiki will close on Wednesday next; April 27. Visit by Bishop Bennett. The Bishop of' Aotearoa, the Bt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, left Napier on Tuesday for the Bay of Plenty. Before he returns to Hawke’s Bay lie will attend a Maori conference at Te Kali;:. Rugby Football. Football enthusiasts are reminded that the . annual general meeting will he held in the Mission Hall, King Street, to-night, commencing at 8 p.m. County Elections. The Opotiki County elections will he held oil Wednesday, May 11. Nominations for the positions of county councillors, Power Board representatives, and Hospital Board members, will close on Wednesday next at the county chambers. The Borough] Roll. A big reduction in the number of electors on the main borough roll is shown for 1938. The number is 143 less than on the main roll in 1935. “talkies” at Matawtai.

'.Arrangements have now been completed at Matawai for the installation of talkie equipment in the Matawai Hall and it is expected that the installation will he completed at 'an early date.

Half-Holiday Poll. As a result c-f a. petition having been received by the Oporilci liorough Council, asking for a poll on. the halfholiday question, public, notice has been given that a poll to determine the statutory half-holiday within the borough of Opotiki will be taken on Wednesday the lltli. May.

Coating Accident. Mr. George Proffit .and not Mr. B. Profit was one of the three brothers involved in tile boating accident at the beginning of the week off the mouth of the Waiotahi stream.

Native Taro Flowers. >A native taro in flower lias been on display in Bell’s fruit shop during the week. The taro was brought in by AD J. Gaskill, who states that the flowers are very rare, none having been noticed on the property during the past forty years.

Ceremony at School. A ceremony commemorating Anzac Day was held at the O.D.H.S. this afternoon in the presence- of representatives of the Opotiki R.S.A. and members of the School .Committee. An appropriate address was delivered by the headmaster, Alt’ A. S. do Alontaik. Bank Renovation. The scaffolding around the Bank of New Zealand building was removed during the week and the building, which has been receiving a coat of special, paint, shows a greatly changed appearance. The heavy, top has been removed and: a. very neat concrete edging lias been put around in place of the very heavy parapet, which was removed some time ago.

Borough Rate Collection. For the year ended Alarcli 31st., 1938. 92.69' per cent, of the current year’s general rates for the Opotiki Borough were collected. The total amount collected: was £31)60 and the amonnt struck was £2940. Including the previous year’s rate collected, 104 per cent, of the rate struck for 1937-38 was collected. Last year the amount collected ’was £3300 and the rate struck was £2950. Plane’s Foroed Landing. All- and Airs G. A. Hathaway of Opotiki, wero passengers on the Fast Coast Airway’s plane Tui, which made a forced landing at • Patutahi on Wednesday morning when on the trip to Napier. .It was expected that the plane would he able to return to Gisborne either yesterday afternoon or early this morning. On dismantling the faulty engine it was found that the trouble would require a fairly lengthy overhaul and the plane will be withdrawn from service for a complete overhaul. As a result, only one plane a. day will be used on the service.

Opotiki,' Agency. / The announcement that- he will take over the agency for Messrs Smith and Caugliey, in Rostgard’s building, is made by Mr W. Sinton.. . Plunket Society. The: annual meeting of. the Opotiki Sub-branch of the Plunket Society will be held in the Parish Hall on Thursday afternoon next. The meeting will commence at 3 p.m. f. R.S.A.. Re-Union Dinner. The annual Re-Union Dinner, accorded t 0 the Opotiki Returned Soldiers will be held on Saturday night in the Lyric Hall, commencing at 8 p.m. All Returned Soldiers are cordally invited. ; ; Anzao Memorial Service. The usual Anzac Day service will be held in .the Regent Theatre on ALonday, next. Returned Soldiers will fall in at the Club Room at 1.30 p.m. and will then march l , to the Memorial in Alain Street. The service in the theatre .will commence at 2 p.m. Toatoa Dairy Company. There appears to be little prospect of the Toatoa dairy factory, which was destroyed by fire some time ago, being rebuilt. A special general meeting of shareholders will be held in the Toa toa hall on Saturday, 7th. May, at 11 a.m. The following special resolution will be proposed: “That the company be wound up voluntarily.” Since the destruction of the factory, suppliers have been supplying the Opotiki dairy factory with cream supplies. Another Long Week-end. The occurrence of Anzac Day next Atonday will provide a. week-end of three clear days for all those who do not ordinarily work on Saturday and one of two and a-lialf days for those whose working week includes Saturday morning. Such a conjunction is met with at rather irregular intervals, owing to the vagaries of leap year, which advances Anzac Day by two days instead of one every fourth year. P.W.D. Appointments. In addition to the appointment of Mr. F. K. Roberts, at P.W.D. engineer to Opotiki, other changes have been made. Mr W. G. Nelson, foreman for th Waikoliu County section, has been transferred to Torere, near Opotiki. Air J. Curtis, foreman at Torere. lias been transferred] to the Alatakaoa County, and will be stationed at Te Araroa. R.S.A. Annual Meeting. In view of the importance of Returned Soldiers keeping up a. personal interest in the affairs of the R.S.A. and the benefits of a good member- . ship, all Returned Soldiers arc asked to make a. special efFort to attend the annual meeting of the Opotiki Association. The meeting will lie held in the Wattle tea-rooms on Tuesday and will commence at 8 p.m. Venturesome Trip. A trip from Auckland to Opotiki in a. yacht is at present being undertaken by Air D. J. Lodge of Auckland, whose brother, Air Al. C. Lodge, is awaiting his arrival here. The yacht, which left Auckland at noon on- Wednesday, is expected to arrive in Opotiki to-day. & to-morrow will proceed to Gisborne with the two brothers aboard. They later intend to make a trip to Australia, in the yacht which is an 18 footer. Tribute to Chairman. .A graceful compliment was paid to the chairman of the Opotiki "County Council, Air J, H. Reid, at this morning’s special meeting of the council. Several members of the council were filling in. their nomination papers, when Air. Reid indicated that lie would be unable to accept, nomination for the following term. Every member of the council present signed a blank nomination paper and invited Air Reid to accept nomination. Air Reid said lie deeply appreciated the tribute but regretted however, much he would have liked to have accepted nomination, that circumstances prevented his doing /so.. . . ;i re/.t, The. Waather.
