Mounted Rifles. The Auckland (East. Coast) Mounted .Rifles will attend a camp at Ngaruawahia, commencing on April 30. Ladles’ Calf Club. Owing to the unsettled state of the weather, the opening date of the Opotiki Ladies’ Golf Club’s season has been postponed till. Wednesday next. New Dental Clinic. Advice lias been received by the Opotiki School •Committee that a contract for building the new Dental Clinic lias been let to Mr 'Whittingha m ; of Papatoetoe. Correction. In the report of the accident which occurred on Sunday morning, it was stated that Mr. William Leslie was an occupant of the car which struck Messrs Shalloon and Francis’ window. Although the ear was .owned by Mr Leslie he was not in the car when the accident occurred. A “Concrete” Fact. An amusing incident was related bv Mrs Woolfield who presided over the Women’s Institute gathering on Thursday. In explaining the annual potato-growing competition held in connection with the various institutes, Mrs Woolfieldi told of the member who was so keen that her plants would bear prolific-ally that shot decided to use superphosphate. The idea, was an excellent one, but as the plants did not seem to thrive as expected, she enquired the reason from her husband. who found that instead of superphosphate. the enthusiastic: member had used cement from a nearby bag. Caterpillar Plague. According to reports considerable damage has been done cn farms in the Opotiki district by hordes of caterpillars. The chief damage appears to 'have been done to paspalum crops. Two farmers in the Waioeka valley report that when they went to. cut paddocks for hav, they found that all the lea fly part of the crop' had been eaten lip, leaving only hie bare stalk and seed-head. (Another farmer in the Waiotahi Valiev also reports having had four paddocks of paspalum destroyed by, the caterpillars. Maize crops have also been attacked, a Nu-_ kuhou termer reporting bis crop to have been spoilt for plucking. The remains of the crop is being fed to pigs. ..Oollisicn on Trafford’s Hill. An accident occurred on Wednesday on the Alotii side of Trafford’s hill., when a light Austin car collided with a heavy Austin car on a narrow part of the hill. The former car, which was driven by Mr. Cf. Harris, of Auckland, and travelling downhill, was not able to pull up and hit the other ear, driven by Colonel Doweling, of To Kuraka. Colonel Dowding’s car was pulled up before the collision and was struck, fairly heavily on the right band front side. A passenger, a ’ swagger, who had been picked l up by j Colonel Dewding’s car was cut about / the face by the broken windscreen. The injured man was brought, to Opotiki where he received attention. The I cuts on Mr Havelock’s face, which ! were about the eyes and nose, were i fortunately not serious.
