ATHLETICS

THE FINAL MEETING n .—l— DECLARED ~ - The big final championship sporesmeeting tp be held to-morrow afternoon will close a, most successful season for the Opotiki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. jA very full programme of running, cycling and field events has been arranged and an interesting afternoon’s sport is assured The main attraction, no doubt, will be the jumping events, whic-n have reached a. very high standard tins, season. Keen competition L anticipated in these events. The public will be keen to . see the Auckland Provincial junior broad jump champion, J. Inskip, in action; also R. 31. Griffin, who broke a. club record in the hop, step and jump recently with a leap of 42ft. lin. Although the club has been unfortunate in losing such a, number of its best athletes through being transferred to other districts, it is gratifying, to see so many promising juniors, competing. This not only applies to the boys hut to the girls, who in two or three seasons will be capable oi taking part in ladies’events. The clubhas been well justified in assisting, juniors, as most of the best competitors in the senior events were only juniors’ two or three seasons ago. The cyclists in the club are young and very keen and they should provide some thrilling races. The trophies competed for during the season and those to be won. at tomorrow’s sports have been considcraitly added to since last year. There have been several cups donated for various events, and the club wishes, to thank the donors for their assistance aitd support. The club is fostering clean, health.' sport, and deserves better support, from tlie public. It feels it is doing its part in connection with the recent legislation to encourage physical fitness.
