Theatre Improvement. Picturegoers will be pleased to note that the management of the JDe Luxe Theatre has recently installed extensive cork-carpeting which will greatly add to the comfort of their patrons. A Good Jump. The jump of 42ft. lin. registered by Mr Griffin at the last ‘Athletic Club’s night meeting was the best registered in Opotiki for many years, and the best registered since the Athletic Club was formed. Freedom Association. Readers are minded of the address to be given by Prof. R. M. Algie, organiser of the Auckland Provincial Freedom Asociation, in the Regent Theatre on Friday night. Huge Tractor. A huge caterpillar tractor' which had been railed to Taneatua. last week, was driven from the railhead to the Opotiki aerodrome on Sunday, and attracted considerable interest as it passed through, the borough. The big machine will be used for haulage purposes in levelling operations. Big Rock on Reserve. An interesting exhibit at last night’s meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council was a very large rock which was found in long grass on the cricket reserve . Unfortunately for the council mower, the rock was not discovered until it had been struck by the knife of the mPwer The rock had undoubtedly. been deliberately placed iu the grass. Measles in Bay of Plenty. Dr. L. Davies, medical officer of health, Gisborne, made a thorough investigation into the measles outbreaks in the Bay of Plenty district last week, visiting the Urc-weia. and To Telco. . Nothing, beyond ordinary measles was discovered. Notifiable Disease. For the week ended at noon on Monday five cases of notifiable disease, three of baciliary dysentry and one each' of erysipelas and tetanus, were reported in the East Cape health district. The case of tetanus occurred in the Bay of Plenty portion of the district and the patient died at Te Puke last week. , The Weather. The following weather forecast for the 24 hours' commencing at 9 a.m. to-day was issued by the meteorological office :—The indications are for south-easterly winds, moderate. There is a prospect of fair weather but warm. The barometer lias a rising tendency. Seas 1 smooth to moderate, but increasing somewhat. New Constable. Constable W. IT. Rogers, who has been a member of the Elthaiu police force for nearly two years, and lias been transferred to Opotiki, went to El t ham from Wanganui, where be was stationed for 14 years. During his long career in the force Constable Rogers lias seen some exciting times, chief of which was during the time lie was a member of the special force which went into the Urewera Country to arrest Rua. Harvest Festival. The Harvest Festival was held in St. Stephen’s Church on Sunday last, all the services being well attended. In the evening the anthem, “Hark, Hark, my Soul” was ably rendered by the choir. Miss Sydenham presiding at the organ. 'There was an abundant offer ing of produce and the following afternoon the Harvest Sale, conducted by the ladies, was held in the Parish Hall. Afternoon tea: was served and a brisk business was done in all departments, everything being sold. The ladies in charge of the stalls were Alesdames J. D. Clark, L. Fox, Sinton. and. the afternoon tea arrangements were in the capable hands of M.esdanies Davey, Hislop and Keen.
