The function was arranged to give his, many friends opportunity of bidding Constable Beasley farewell prior to his departure for > Tokomaru Bay where he Inis been •promoted to the charge of the policestation. ’ Air C. Gordon, who was in the chair, extended a welcome to Sergeant Lsbister and Constable Cooper, expressing the hope that they would enjoy their stay in Opotiki. In speaking of the guest of honour, Mr Gordon said that Constable Beasley had ably fulfilled' his duties as. a. police officer and had made many friends in Opotiki, finding timq to enter into the sporting, life of the- district. He was a keen pig-hunter and a great lover of horses and dogs. While regretting li.is departure from their midst, the speaker added, he expressed .the sincere ' wishes of all present that Constable and -Mrs Beasley and family would he happy in their new home. Messrs F. W. Bridger, F. J. Short, H. Rowland, G. B. Murray, J. R. Sinclair, J. O’Sullivan, J. T. Tabb, M O. Kidd, and Sergeant Isbister also spoke in eulogistic terms oti the guest of honour. in his reply, Constable Beasley thanked the speakers for their remarks. - He said he had enjoyed the five years he had spent in Opotiki and had made many good' friends during that time. Ha had always endeavoured to- fulfil his duties fairly, and hoped he was not leaving any enemies behind. He extended a cordial welcome to all his Opotiki friends to ''all on him when visiting-Tokomaru Bay. Mr 0. Gordon then presented the guest of honour with a handsome cheque, accompanied by an. attractive • handbag for Airs Beasley. Constable Beasley suitably' replied. During the evening the following toasts were honoured : The Police Department, proposed by Mr F. J. Short and lesponded to bv Sergeant isbister and Constable Cooper, the Legal Profession, Air IT. Rowland —Mr. E. C". Fast, The Ladies, Mr M. 0. Kidd—-Messrs Lovett. Wright and the -Mayor, Air. G. S. Moody; the Late-comers, Mr J. R. Sinclair—Messrs Hodgson, Burrett, Dawson and Stevenson; the Press, Air F. W. Bridgcr—-Mr W. J. Scott; the Chairman, Air J. T. Tabb —Air C. Gotti on. Messrs Rowland, Jephson, J. O'Sullivan, Morell, Scott, .Dixon, T. O’Sullivan and Stevenson contributed vocal selections in the course cl the evening and Messrs J. T. J.abb and JWykie entertained with recitations. Orchestral selections were played by tlie Orphan Olub’s orchestra under the leadership of Air S. AlcDougall who also played the accompaniments.. A bright and successful evening was conducted with tbe singing of ‘.Aultl Lang Syne”.
