BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of Borough Council was held iiii tfae Borough Chambers last night. Present; the Mayor (Mr 6.- S. 'Moody loi's S. Shalfoon, S. EL' G. Johnson, J. J. Moody, F. J. Short, A. G. Stevenson, and Mr W. H. Briggs (town clerk). The minutes of the previous meeting were- confirmed and outward correspondence read and approved. Accounts were passed for payment as follows District fund 1 account, £376 ss; wharf account, £SO Us 8d Domain Board, £6O 2s Id; Cemetery account, £57 16s lOd. Bank balances: District fund (dr.), £244 9s lid; wharf account (cr.) £IBO7 10s 9d; Domain Board (dr.), £35 16s 8d; Cemetery (cr.), £BS 2s 7d. Cr Short, referring to the debit balance of the district fund account, said the truck purchased during the year had been paid for. That amount had not been budgeted for.—Cr. Shalfoon referred to outstanding rates and said it wasn’t fair to those who bad paid the rates. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: — Band Instruments. Mr. Matthews wrote in connection with the trusteeship of the band instruments. and stated that it was intended to band the instruments over to the boro-ugli council.—ln, reply to the Mayor, Cr. Johnson said Mr. Pipe was president of the band committee and bad l charge of the instruments. Cr . Shalfoon said the instruments - belonged to the borough council. Cr. Johnson said the new instruments had been purchased by tlie band committee and the borough council had nothing to do with the new instruments. Or. Short moved that .the clerk investigate the minutes in connection with band instruments and the matter he dealt with a,t. the next meeting. —Carried. v Subscription. - The Auckland Provincial Employers’ Association wrote re a; special subscription. On the motion of Cr. Webb, seconded by Or. Short, it. was decided to pay the amount. Otara River Erosion. The District Engineer, Tauranga, wrote asking for particulars of the proposed river diversion cut below the Otara bridge.—A plan of the proposed cut was examined by. councillors and it was decided to; forward the required' particulars. —The plan showed that it. was proposed to- put a. straight cut through, completely cutting off the sharp bond in the river. The cut would he eight chains; back from the point of the bend. (At the present time the river lias reached the stopbank. which is in some danger, according to' a statement made by Cr Webb. Tenders for Lease. Only one tender was received for a lease of a section at the northern end. of the borough, The offer of £6 from Mr. C. Payne was accepted. Cow Crazing. Cr. Shalfoon moved that licenses for cow grazing on the borough streets lie issued as last year.—Seconded bv Cr. Johnson and carried. Water for Kukumoa. A report was presented in connection with a request for water connection by a number of Kukumoa residents. Councillors stated that there was an alternative suggestion that tile residents concerned would put in the pipes themselves. The recommendation of the waterworks committee was adopted. \ Protection of Water Main. The water works committee reported on the question oUffife protection of the water main near tile junction of the Tutaetoko and Otara streams. Cr. Short said iti was the opinion of the committee that the best V scheme to make a satisfactory job woulcl be to put in a cut and tlie river diverted l down the old channel. The bank could be tapered and planted with young willows. The river was now within four feet of the main.- It was suggested that the borough apply to the county council for assistance as
