Talbot recently returned to New Zealand per s.s. “Tainui’’, after three years spent with her people in Cork City, Ireland. Mrs Talbot is the gyiest of Mrs H. Talbot, Paerata Ridge. Mrs S. Grant will leave during the week-end for a holiday visit to Thames and. Auckland. She will be accompanied by Mrs A. H. Hilfcrd who will spend her holiday in Auckland. *- ■» * * Aliss Ellen G. Couper AI.A., at s present on the teaching staff of the New Brighton High School, has been appointed additional assistant at the Opotiki District High School and will commence her new duties in the near future.
PRESENTATION On Wednesday morning, Miss Doreen Beasley, a member of Mr Chas. Shalloon’s staff, was the recipient of a handsome gold wristlet watch, presented to her by the members of the staff prior to her departure for Tokomaru. Mr S. Shalfoon, who made the presentation, expressed the regret of the staff in losing AMss Beasley, but hoped that she would be happy iir her new, surroundings. Miss Beasiey charmingly responded. REBEKAH LODGE CARD .EVENIN'CIone of the series, of card evenings organised by the memocrs of tue llcbekah Lodge, was held in the Beg cut Tea-rooms on Wednesday evening. 'J'liere was a good attendance of players, Flag 500 1 being played. The travelling hag was won by Mr 13. King. other prize-winners being Airs H. Parkinson, Airs K. Nc-wtli, All's Burgess and Aliss Joyce AA ebb. The consolation prizes were awarded to Airs Palmer, All's C. Newth, Airs J. Parkinson and Air J. Matts. JA dainty supper was served by the hostesses, All's Pennell and Airs Boyaelc, and brought a pleasant evening to a close. PRESENTATION TO MR. J. SMITH BFT J R EMT'jN T AS SECRET A. BY OF AA" ATERS ID EiRS’ UNION The members of the Opotiki AYaterside Workers’ Union assembled at the Rand room recently, to honour Air. J. Smith, on the occasion of his retirement from the position of union secretary. This position has been held by Air Smith for thirteen years. Air S. E. Webb, as chairman of the Union, spoke in eulogistic terms, of Air Smith’s long and useful service, and, on behalf of the members, asked him to accept a handsome sil-ver-mounted pipe, suitably engraved. Air Smith suitably replied. ,A letter, expressing his personal thanks for Air Smith’s services was received from Air J. Roberts, secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Union.
