Benzine Shipment. The “Katie S.” arrived at the Opotiki wharf last week-end) with a load of, benzine. Card Evening. A flag 500 card evening will be held in the Regent -Tea-rooms on Wednesday next, under the auspices of the Rebekah Lodge. Hawthorm Berries. Several Opotiki residents have informed the “News”' that, according to an eld Maori theory, the prolific,crops of berries this autumn is a sure sign of a hard winter, and Nature is making provision for the winter food supply for bird life. Sale by Tender, The Public Trustee invites tenders for the purchase of a dwelling and 2 roods 0.9 perches of land in Richard Street. Opotiki. Tenders cdose on 31st March. Beauty Specialist. Miss Panline Bryant commenced duties last week as a beauty specialist in the “Marita” Salon in Mr. T. Hickey’s present premises. Mr. Hickey, invites a share of public patronage. Auction Sale. An auction sale will be"conducted on Saturday next at the residence of Mr. R.. Cuff. Richard Street. Mr. Cuff is leaving the district. Mr. C. Pipe will be the auctioneer. Short Earthquake. J The sharp earthquake which was felt in other parts of the Bay. of Plenty last Thursday af about 9.30 a. m. was a 1 so felt by a number of Opotiki residents. Allitough not as heavy as at Whakatane. the shake was quite sharp but only lasted about two seconds. Slight earthquakes were also felt at about 7.30 a.m. on the same morning. Trout Plentiful. Messrs K. Hansen and C 4. Brklson (Auckland), had a very successful fishing expedition up the YV aioeka river during the week-end. They landed ten line trout-, the average weight being three and a-lialf pounds. The largest trout weighed six and a-lialf pounds. Fishing eonditons in the river have improved considerably during the past fortnight. Flowering Artichokes. Several areas of artichokes were planted some time ago in the Tirolianga valley. The- artichokes are now in full flower and with tlieir beautiful golden yellow crTcur present a picturesque sight from the main highway. White Island Trip Cancelled. Owing to the unfavourable weatherforecast broadcast for the week-end. it was decided to cancel the launch trip to White Island yesterday. The trip was to- have been fer the purpose of trying out the waters in the vicinity of the island as sword-fishing grounds. Actually tiie day turned out to he an ideal one for such a trip, and there was general disappointment at the postponement. Cloustcn Arrives. Considerable interest was taken in the announcement yesterday morning that Flying Officer A. E. Cloustcn, accompanied by his eo-pilot, Mr. Victor Ricketts, would leave Sydney for New Zealand and Was expected to arrive in about six hours. The wireless broadcast during the long waiting period and official reception was very poor, this being chiefly due to the fact that other voices could he heard all the time, at times drowning the voice of the announcer, who was working under a considerable handicap. As the time for the expected arrival of the ’plane drew out, a certain amount of anxiety was felt for the safety of the airmen, lmt the swiftly-flying Comet was at last .seen about an hour after the expected landing time, and after circling around the Blenheim airport several times. Flying Officer Clouston finally made a splendid landing and received a tumultuous welsome. The Comet toek off again this morning on the first stage .of the return trip to England and should arrive in Sydney about mid-afternoon.
Shark off Beactv, An early morning rider on the. beach reports having seep a 9-foot shark just beyond Hukuwai Beach. The shark was chasing a shoal oi smaller fish and was, when seen, swimming in about three feet of water. Thei Weather. . The following weather forecast for the 24 hours commencing -at 9 a.m. to-day was issued' by the meteorological office The indications are for moderate freshing north winds after about six hours backing by, west to south. Weather mainly fair to cloudy b'ut changeable with occasional showers. Weather probably cooler to-nior-row. Barometer little movement. Seas smooth to moderate.
