OPOTIKI - ANNUAL MEETING the tenth annual meeting of the Opotiki Women’s Institute wa s held recently in the Parish Hall, Airs fisher presiding* over a good attendance of members. The annual report was read and adoptecl and the presentation of the balance sheet revealed a satisfactory position. The roll call was “Hints for. the Programme” and brought forth many helpful and some amusing suggestions. The travel talk, “A Trip to Nelson” was given by Airs. J. T. Merry. All. arrangements were made for the forthcoming federation meeting and the Pioneers’ afternoon to he held next month. The competition for three zinnias was won by All’s S. AlcAlillan who was also placed first and second in the competition for three asters. Airs. Beattie was the successful competitor for three begonias. Airs. Fisher took this opportunity of thanking the officers, members of the committee, and all who had helped to make the year a succcessful one. Charming bouquets were presented to Airs' Fisher, Aliss Sydennam and Airs Bridge, on behalf of Aims Fi. Bridge who was absent. Mrs. L. Fox has been acting secretary during Aliss Bridge’s absence. The election of officers resulted as follows : President, Airs. Fisher. Vice-presidents, Airs Fox and Airs E. Alaxwell. Committee, AOs. Hughes, Airs I ox, Airs Pearson, AOs F. J. Short, Airs A. Short, Airs A. Forbes, Mrs E. Alaxwell. Airs E. J. Burton, Aliss B. Alaxwell, Aliss N. Neil son. Treasurer, Aliss At. Sydennam. Secretary, Aliss N-. Neilsou. A dainty supper was served by the hostesses, AOs E. Young and Airs SA foody. The National Anthem brought a successful meeting to a close. Hardening circle A meeting of the Gardening Circle of the Opotiki Institute was held on Friday at the home of AOs Alcrrv as the weather was unfavourable for the
intended meeting at the Alotor Camp. Mrs Forbes presided over a fair attendance and apologies were given for. several members. Mrs Fisher read an article on the cactus family, which grow in great variety and to 60i feet in. dry countries providing fleshy succulent food for animals. The noted botanist Burbank lias evolved a spineless and fibreless variety of great value. New Zealand gardeners can make an extensive collection of small varieties, fruit-bearing and with beautiful flowers. It was deckled to donate the p_ast year’s subscriptions to Air Potts to help in the good work being done in the Woodlands Domain. 111 February the Circle met on the Domain with friend's and a large number of Waimana G.C. members when there was general appreciation of the natural beauty of the spot- and of the improvements being made. There were good entries in the three best flower competition, when Airs Clark and Ah-s Fisher tied for first place. Afternoon, tea was enjoyed and ihcdisplay of bright flowers admired in their setting of lawns and shrubbery.
