Hickey announces that he has opened a ladies’ beauty salon at hi,s present, premises. Particulars pi ay he seen in the advertisement. Van on Fire. The milk delivery van belonging to Mr. Massey of the “Riverside” Dairy caught fire pn the hospital hill this morning. Little damage was done to the van. Autumn Flower Show. The annual autumn flower show, held under the auspices of the Opotiki Sunshine League, will he held on Thursday, May 5. Further particulars will be given Jater. Sports Postponed. Owing to the uncertainty of the weather and tile heavy tracks the Opotiki Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club lias , decided to postpone the final night meeting until Friday next. The club desires particularly to put on a good display for the final display. Power Interruptions. There were numerous short interruptions in the power supply on Wednesday night and the power again failed for a. brief, interval last night. Apart from the necessity to procure lamps and candles, little inconvenience was caused. Showery Weather. Although the total fall has not been very great, heavy showers have fallen in Opotiki during the last two days and will keep up the splendid growth of grass throughout the district. A heavy swell was running in the Bay of Plenty this morning. The Weather. The following weather forecast for the 24 hours commencing at 9 a.m. to-day was issued by. the meteorological office: —The indications are for moderate westerly winds freshening at times. Weather mainly fair to cloudy, occasional rain probable in most places. Barometer unsteady, with falling tendency 1 . Seas smooth to moderate. Matawai Dog Trials. The Matawai Sheepdog Trial Club has appointed as judge of its annual field trials. Mr. E. Aylward. The meeting at Matawai will be held on March 30 and 31. and April 1, the programme comprising a long head, a short head and yard, and a zig-zag huntaway class. This '"'ill he the* first gathering of the season in Poverty Bay. Ccak County Rat^s. Reviewing rate collections in his annual report to the Cook County Council on Wednesday, the chairman, Cr. Chas. Matthews, expressed satisfaction that rate payments showed a collection slightly in excess of 92 pel' cent. “Of the total amount struck. £'33,987, including general rate, special rates, drainage rates, and sanitary service rate, £48.838 was collected, £1,10(3 was allowed in rebate for prompt payment, so that only £4043 remains unpaid. The payments thus show a collection slightly in excess of 92 per cent. This npist be considered a highly satisfactory position. P.B. Cattle Fair. The offering at the closing day of the Poverty Bay Stockbrokers' Associate n’s first fat cattle fair of the season, Wednesday, mainly comprised 1 ■£- year steers, although some of the highest-priced l , pens contained a few two-vear-olcls. The attendance was smaller than usual, and, generally speaking, the sale fell below expectations. There was competition .on all lines, with activity on the part of Bay of Plenty and Wairoa buyers, but many of the reserves were not reached. The top price was £c Is, for a prime pen. ,
