A HINT FO R RANGIORA.

To the Editor oj ' The Observer.' Sir, — Will you allow me. through the medium of your interesting paper to '.ffer to the good people of that busy town Eangiora just a hint as to the possibility of making it more popular with the travelling public. Business called me a few days ago from Christchurch to Oxford, and the following, day I found that I was compelled to return as far as Eangiora, where certain information I required could only be

obtained. I reached my destination " shortly after eight -a.m., and? by noon had tranasacted all I had to dof '; from that hour. till evening I had to kill time as best I might— a perfect stranger alone, amongst the many, idle amongst the busy. The- streets of Rangio_4 were to me more solitary, than the glens of a mountain bush. ; V I-* learnt, on enquiry, •• that there was a Literary Institute and Library m the town, but on reaching the door of that establishment a noticej- somewhat roughly written*, informed me ythat none but were admitted; "Tiktwas •the u_-kindest cut of all.*'' To find an Institution ' having pretensions to a literary character so inhospitable, "appeared tome a great mistake. What a slur; upon 'the great " Republic ol Letters I" Aiown of. such commercial standing as Rangiora might well afford a Public Reading Room, -trhere a sober stranger could pass a way. an hour or two while waiting for the train.. Yours, &c., „ V Tbaveluib.
