Gisborne has had an unfortunate experience with its waterworks. The borough engineer now recommends what practically amounts to a reconstruction of the many miles of pipe-line. One source of difficulty is that the pipes have to be laid across a river many times, and have been damaged by floods through not being sunk deep enough. The engineer proposes to reduce the number of crossings from 52 to 9. It is not a big river, but even a big creek in flood has a powerful scouring action on its bed, especially if this has been loosened.
The discovery at a Battersea inquest of a man with three lungs serves as a reminder of similar human puzzles, as, for instance, that chameleon-like man, Mr W. B. Harris, of Ithaca, U.S.A. Five years ago it was demonstrated by New York physicians that, his skin changed colour according to" the varying atmospheric conditions, the different shades being light grey, light blue, violet, and deep purple. Then there is a St. Louis man with a more valuable monstrosity in the shape of a musicalheart. In beating, it makes several distinct tones, and the fortunate owner has accordingly been induced to bequeath it at his death to an American scientific institution in consideration of a payment of 500 dollars. The lady he courts is to be envied—ii she has a musical ear.
A back blocks teacher, writing to the Taranaki Education Board asking that a teacher's residence be erected, said he would get married at once if he had a house, and he would be a-ble to get on a long way better. He was unable to get in nearly the same amount of study as his fellow teachers. When he got home at. night he had a very rowdy house to study in. . "If I were married I would have every comfort, and would have a tar better chance to get on in every way."
