CHARITABLE AID.
COROMANDEL IS SATISFIED
Coromandel appears to be well satisfied at the separation from Thames, and figures are published to show that a considerable saving has been effected. It is pointed out that for the four years before separation was effected, the expenditure of the County Council on account of hospital and charitable aid averaged 2s 6d, the amounts for the various years being as under: 1906, £378 12s id; 1907, 7s iod; 1908, X2S 1 id; 1909, .£295 8s yd. Last year the demand made on the County Council
lor the purpose stated was £250, which is £45 less than the lowest demand made by Thames. But it is significant
that this year the County Council is called upon to pay so that when a similar period (tour years) is covered it may be found that all is not so well as
would appear from the comparison just made. It is stated that of the £3S°i expended upon the residence of the medical officer, so that it will be an asset worth its full value. It is pointed out that local administration has proved economical, and as the altered conditions appear to suit Thames admirably (lor Coromandel district was always a heavy dram) a double benefit was gained when the northern district
cut the painter. We have not seen the figures, but we take it that now Coromandel is not so generous in the matter
ot locel charitable aid expenditure as in days of yore when some other part of the district was providing the wherewithal !—Thames Star.
