His lather gave him a present of a bicycle, and jumping on the machine he followed the pernicious practice of many other cyclists by riding on the footpath. Being a novice he could not steer like more expert riders, and he unfortunately knocked a little girl down. Chief Detective Broberg, interviewed at Christchurch as to the working of* the new Gaming Act, said :—" It is possible that men are still bookmaking, but if so are doing it privately and wagering only with persons of substance with whom they are well acquainted. This is a matter concerning which it is extremely difficult to make any move. Even if we had suspicions, it would be next to impossible to find any evidence to justify them. Empowered by the Gaming Act, we were ready to clear the streets ot bookmakers, and we have accomplished that result. The bookmakers themselves recognised that the game was up. A few have retired on their profits, and a number have left the country."
