SEEING INTO A LUNG.
INTERESTING OPERATION. [By Electridl Telegraph.] I.: Thames, May 23. A case of an operation of an unusual nature, v/hich resulted in the saving of the life of a child, has" been recorded at Thames. A week ago a five year old boy, the son of Mr Hanson, inhaled a whole-peanut, which lodged in the base of the lung. Inflammation was caused, and pneumonia followed. Dr Walshe was called in, and realising that the removal of the foreign matter from the lung was essential it the child's life was to be saved, advised that Dr Hardie Neil, of Auckland, be summoned. Dr Neil was wi;ed for, and, arriving at Thames on Thursday evening, he at once set about the difficult task of removing the obstruction. This was done by inserting an elec'rically-hghted tube right down the chi'd's throat into the lung, where, by means of the illumination thus provided, Dr Hardie Neil was enabled to see the nut, and successfully removed it. The child is now out of
danger, and progressing favourably.
