The Ohinemuri Gazette. FRIDAY, MAY 19, 1911. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The report submitted by the president at the annual meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce showed that that body had during the first year of its existence fully justified the expectations of its promoters. Although the Chamber was not always successful in its efforts, still it was evident that the members were on the whole proceeding along the right lines, and their endeavours to promote the prosperity of our district have not been without result. At all times the Chamber of Commerce has endeavoured to advance the best interests of the district, and the work that it has
carried out during the past year shows that the formation of such a body was fully required. A good deal of the work of the Chamber naturally fell to the president, and that this work was appreciated was fully evident. Mr W. McWatters filled the position of president with credit to himself and to the Chamber of which he was for the time being the head. That such an able president as Mr E. W. Porritt has been, secured for the ensuing year is a matter for congratulation. Mr Porritt has at all times been ready and willing to take
his part in any movement that would promote the welfare of the town and district. And he can be relied on to fill the position of president of the Chamber of Commerce in a highly satisfactory manner. But although the Chamber has splendid officers at its head, and although a good many of the business people take a lively and active interest in its affairs, there are some who should be members who have not so far joined the Chamber. It should be the duty of every resident —and more especially those in business—to aid as far as possible any movement that will tend to advance the interests of the district. The primary object of the Chamber of Commerce is to assist in pushing Paeroa and the surrounding district along the road to prosperity, and it should therefore have the support of all true citizens. We hope to see the Chamber of Commerce considerably strengthened numerically during the year, and we feel sure that if the work is continued on the same lines as during the past twelve months that much good will ensue from ths labours of the members.
