It was a sweltering hot forenoon on August 1, and Brown the junior clerk at Sweatem and Swotam's was feeling sticky. Suddenly the voice of Swotam senior floated to him across the room. "Brown, you can take a month off." It was too much for him. Seizing his pen-holder in one hand, and his ruler in the other, he danced a wardance on the office floor. " Brown," roared Swotam, " are you crazy ?" "No, sir ; no, sir," said Brown ; " but you said a month, did you not sir ?" v " Certainly, that is what I said. To-day is the first of the month and last month's calendar remains upon jour desk. Take last month off." The temperature dropped with such suddenness as almost ■', to burst the office thermometer.
