THAMES FATALITY.
MR JAS. HINDMAN DROPS
DEAD
HEART FAILURE THE CAUSE
Death came with startling suddenness at Thames on Saturday morning to Mr James Hindman, a well-known and highly respected resident ot Thames, who has for many years been in charge of Messrs J. M. Mennie Ltd. bakery. The deceased, who was 57 years of age, had apparently been in good health, but during the last week or so he had complained of experiencing a peculiar feeling about the region of the heart, and a day cr two ago, when speaking of the matter, said that he was getting too stout. Nothing serious was anticipated, however, and even Mr Hindman did not suspect that there was anything seriously wrong, though he mentioned that he experienced a feeling as though he had wind around the heart. On Saturday morning he proceeded to work as usual and was in the act of putting in the " batch " of loaves—about half the loaves were in the oven —when, he suddenly collapsed. His son, Ernest, was with him at the time and as Mr Hindman fell his son caught him and supported him, while another employee (a young man named Collins) also assisted. The manager, Mr J. Rowe, was sent for and he speedily appeared on the scene. A look at Mr Hindman's face showed Mr Rowe that the unfortunate
man was in extremis. All possible was done to restore animation. They chafed Mr Hindman's hands and body, but it was of no avail. The deceased uttered
no words, he merely gave two or three groans, and passed away. Medical assistance was at once sent for, and Dr Lapraik soon arrived but he could do nothing except to certify that the deceased had died from heart failure.
The funeral took place at Thames this
afternoon
