SHIPPING DISASTER.

PASSENGER STEAMER SUNK

RAMMED BY A WARSHIP

[By Electric Telegraph.}

New York, May 12,

The s.s. Merida, a large passenger steamer belonging to the Ward line, when on the voyage from Havana, came into collision with the United States warship Admiral Farragut.

The Farragut's ram penetrated the hull of the Merida, which immediately began to take in water, and gradually settled down.

The Merida, however, remained afloat for five hours, and in the meantime the whole of the Merida's 200 passengers and crew were transferred to the warship.

The Merida sank in deep water.
