CONTINENTAL SENSATION
ENGLISH SADIES FACE
BRIGAND
Three English ladies -have been the victims of a dastardly attack by a brigand at , Menlone, the paradise of
Southern France.
Mrs Bud, mother of Alderman Charles Bird, Lord Mayor of Cardiff, was walking with her daughier-in-Jaw, Mrs Graham Bird, and a companion, at Cape Martin. ;It was a gloriously fine afternoon, and they were all absorbed in the beautiful prospect offered by sky and sea when suddenly a repulsivelooking man dashed in front of them. The spot was the loneliest part of their ! walk. The man demanded that they should deliver up all their valuables. Meeting with a refusal, he threatened violence. The ladies pluck'tly refused to give in, despite the most violent menaces, and the robber tried to snatch at the ladies' jewels. In the scuffle he took a bag which Mrs Graham Bird was carrying' in her hand, and also a gold bracelet which Mrs Bird was wearing.
The ladies returned iorthwith to Men-
tone to acquaint the British consul with their adventure.
The French police, with strange prevarication, declared subsequently to curious inquirers that they had heard nothing of the affair.
