PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
The usual monthly meeting of the
Paeroa School Committee was held in Mr W. McWatters' office last night, the members present being Messrs Niccol (chairman), Buchanan, Black, Donovan McWatters, Treanor, and Brunskill (honorary secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. From the Education Board was received the usual quarterly allowance of £17 14s, the special additional grant of ,£9 7s 6d, and a grant for water rates of 3s 9 d. The Education Board wrote stating that Mr C. Meredith, assistant in the secondary department, had been appointed to Cambridge, and that applications had been invited for the appoint-
ment of his successor. The action of the chairman m suggesting to the Education Board that a male teacher be
appointed was approved, and it was decided to hold a special meeting if necessary to consider the names of applicants tor the position when these are forwarded by the Board.
A letter was received irom the Board ot Education, stating that the architect does not consider,it advisable to have the school grounds gravelled while the new building is in progress, but that the contractor will make good any damage done to the grounds. It was decided to postpone consideration of this matter until the new building" is near completion. Circulars and letters dealing with the question ,of grants foi school gardens were received from the Board of Educa-
tion in reply to the committee's application tor a subsidy towards the cost of preparing the additional school reseive for agricultural classses. The headmaster (Mr Murphy), who was present at the meeting, stated that the instructor of ■ agriculture favoured having the classes conducted in a portion of the present boys' playground. Messrs McWatters, Black, and Niccol were appointed a sub-committee to visit the site with the headmaster, with po\ver to act. As an amount for the school garden has already been promised locally, and this will be subsidised both by the Education Department and the Education Board, there will probably be ample funds for the purpose.
The headmaster was authorised to procure the Journal of Agriculture ior twelve months for the purpose of assisting the high school agricultural classes.
It was decided to obtain 14 glass jars to contain small quantities of artificial manures and chemicals belonging to the school. Accounts amounting to ,£8 3s were passed for payment. Messrs Black and Donovan were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Messrs McWaiters and Brunskill were
appointed to collect the donations promised towards the cost of laying a larger
water main to the school, and to pay same in to the County Council, so as to have tne work proceeded with.
