Paeroa milk suppliers give notice that the price of milk during the winter months will be twopence per pint.

Mr E. Cooke, who was tormerly a resident of Paeroa, and for many years bandmaster, vvas on a short visit to Paeroa yesterday.

Mi C. Meredith, of the Paeroa School, has been appointed to the charge ot the secondary department of the Cambridge High School. The Auckland Winter Exhibition will be held in the Harbour Board buildings, Queen Street wharf, Auckland, from May 22nd to jMay 27th. Particulars will be given in later issues of this paper. Of the four hotels in Tauranga three of them have just recently had new landlords. The well-known Commercial Hotel,, of that town, owned and so ably controlled by Mr J. McStay, has been purchased by Mr N. Quirk, late of the police force, and formerly stationed in Waihi.

Mr Abraham Nation, a prominent sports promoter and racing man, has met his death in a peculiar manner in New York. He was playing with a pet bulldog recently, and allowed the animal to lick his hand. A slight cut must have, received poison, for three days later the unfortunate man developed hydrophobia, and died an awiul death.

Mr Kalaugher, the instructor in agriculture to the schools under the Board ot Education, was in Paeroa yesterday on a visit to the local school, conlerring with the teachers and arranging a programme of work in this subject for the upper standards and the high school pupils. Mr Kalaugher is also visiting the other schools in the district, and will return, to advise and to superintend the work done, from time to time.

Contractors should note that three more contracts have been added to the list of works for which the Ohinemuri County Council is inviting tenders. These are for the erection ot a bridge ovei ihe Waitoki Stream, for clearing portion of the Golden Cross-Whare-kirauponga track, and for forming, culverting, and metalling Coronation Street, Paeroa.

A young man named McClymont, of Karangahake, was charged at the Police Court at Paeroa yesterday with being in arrears with the payments lor the maintenance of his illegitimate child. The arrears amounted to £\$ 16s, but of this amount £2 had been paid to the complainant. Defendant offered to pay off the arrears at once, and so as to give him an opportunity to pay the balance the case Vvas adjourned for a month, the Magistrate warning defendant that he was liable to be sent to gaol for a breach of-the maintenance order.

A census enumerator in South Canterbury has communicated to the local paper an item of news which is highly interesting because of the light it throws on the conjugal condition of the rural population of New Zealand. Within a radius of io miles of Fairlie he discovered 64 bachelors, each of whom is in good circumstances, owning an average of about 300 acres. Each of these is well able to support a wife, and yet is contented to live in single blessedness.
