The fusing of an electric cable in the Pinkton colliery set fire to- the woodwork at the bottom of the shaft.

Dense smoke rose from the burning shaft, but all the 400 miners who were below at the time were sately got to the surface, the rescues being thrilling owing to the rapid spread of the flames.
